Dear all

I have windows Xp & IE 6.0.2800.106. I initially had a problem with my homepage defaulting to 'about blank', a few weeks later things have got worse with a new homepage with a toolbar with different coloured boxes for 'Remove Toolbar', 'Gambing', 'Internet' etc...

I have McAfee and I've run spybot which initially found coolwww (or something like that) and also AdWare and then CWshredder. Now spybot finds a 'DSO exploit' and despite apparently fixing this with spybot, the 'new' homepgae persists.

Spybot is now also detecting registry changes when McAfee downloads which to date I've refused..should I?

My log is below

My email is onetytwoty@yahoo.co.uk

onetytwoty@yahoo.co.uk

Any help will be gratefuly recieved

Hello,

It's better to print this out or save into notepad, because you will have to work into safe mode, and this page wouldn't be available then.

Download remv3.zip
You will find remv3.zip as an attachement there, so download it.
Unzip all the files to a permanent folder.

*Reboot into SAFE MODE
°To get into the Windows XP Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

*Enable the ”Show Hidden Files and Folders” option:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

*Start hijackthis and place a checkmark before the following items if still present:

Thanks for you incredibly quick response.

I followed your instructions to the letter, but when I went to find my default connection in network connections all I found was a blank space with a toolbar above: Links Email Member Centre Search Wanadoo Wanadoo Online Help.

Any suggestions?

The log.txt & HijackThisLog are below

Thanks

That's ok.. no problem.

Your log looks clean again but... I feel something is still there, so I need to be sure.
So please perform following steps:

Download rkfiles.zip
UNZIP the contents to a permanent folder

Doubleclick rkfiles.bat
It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
Wait till the doswindow closes and reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt in your next reply.

Thanks again

I still notice 2 things that aren't 'right':

1. when switching on the the laptop always offers to dialup
2. the homepage is now www.findallgood.com - a site I havent ever visited.

BTW I'm doing this when signing on as HOME as this is the user I always use. Does it make a difference if I'm using the computer as HOME or Administrator?

Regards

Kuldip

Hello,

Nothing wrong with C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfrg.msc, but I don't like the C:\WINDOWS\system32\cm.exe

I want to know what it is, so can you go to next site:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

On top you'll find: File to upload and scan.
Now browse to the next file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cm.exe

Click submit and let it scan.
Post the results in your next reply.

Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, I cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.

Also, I am aware of the implications of a setup like this. I am sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). I am aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. I do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail me about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site.

Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception.

This service costs me money. Dedicated hosting, undonated scanner licenses etc... If you find this service useful, please consider a (small) donation to help cover expenses.

Nice info.

Ok. That file must go.

Delete the next file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cm.exe

Also look if following are present and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\ttl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\IEXPLORE.exe <== watch the spelling and the folder where it is in!!

If you're having troubles with deleting them in normal mode, try it in safe mode.

Fix next lines in hijackthis again:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://findallgood.com/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://findallgood.com/

Reboot and post a new hijackthislog.

OK I did as suggested:

cm.exe was deleted
ttl.exe wasnt there (even in safe mode)
IEXPLORE.exe showed up as IEXPLORE.EXE-2712234.pf which I deleted, there was another IEXPLORE in Servic Pack Files which I left.

When I ran HijackThis and fixed the R0 entires (the 017 one wasnt there), spybot warned me about changing the home page to about:blank which has now happened.

Here is the fresh HijackthisLog

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup

When disabled, fix the next lines in hijackthis again:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://findallgood.com/

Reboot and post a new hijackthislog.

Log looks clean again.

As long the about:blank page is a blank page, it's no problem. :D

How are things running now?

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates, so visit ASAP http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to update to SP2

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
