I’m trying to help a friend with a virus/Trojan problem. He apparently had not updated his anti-virus program and had no spyware program at all. He has a blue desktop with the yellow words Warning: Spyware threat has been detected on your PC. Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity.

I have tried to run dss.exe as advised by this forum and get the message: internal error, aborting. Everything I try to do to fight this virus and at this point I feel that it is a fight…. It blocks my every turn. I tried to run smitrem.exe and it said: incorrect file size, please try downloading this file again. Try to run smitfraud.exe and it does nothing. I cleaned everything I could with CCleaner.

Any time I open Internet Explorer and go to a website to scan the computer ie kapersky or trendmicro it will divert me to www.womansday.com or something wild like that, Or to the website where I can buy the spyware removal that will infect me further.

I ran Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and it removed 37 trojans and identified one as Trojan.vundo. I opened regedit and found winhound and tried to delete it manually and it said it could not be deleted. I installed AVG 8 and ZoneAlarm but could not update them. Any time I try a removal tool it brings up a triangle in the taskbar that says Internet attack attempted or spyware identified. Windows Updates is blocked. Will not let me manage add-ons in Internet Explorer or even let me launch Firefox to use as an alternative browser. Will not let me Alt-Ctr-Del to get into Task Manager – says it is disabled by administrator.

I finally was able to run Hijack This and hopefully someone can help me fight this: Thanks in advance.

I did as you instructed and renamed the file. It gave the same error message as before: internal error; aborting. I'm ready for any other suggestions.

thanks so much for your help.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

Ok do the following please:
===================
Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    Posted Image

    Posted Image

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**
Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

I'm doing exactly as you direct. However I'm having to download everything onto my desktop on my laptop and then onto a flash drive to transfer over to the infected computer. The computer's browser will not let me connect to any website like www.bleepingcomputer.com or any website that can offer any computer advice. I have it disconnected from the internet because it keeps trying to direct me to a website to purchase spyware.

I have downloaded combo-fix.exe and will try to run it again.

I disabled everything. Put combo-fix on the desktop, ran it and get the same error message: some installation files are corrupt. Please download a fresh copy and retry the installation

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log
