If someone has a few minutes to look through these logs to be sure my system hasn't been compromised, I'd really apppreciate it. Someone signed onto AOL and booted me off yesterday immediately after bf sent hate emails. I have changed passwords several times since our seperation last October, and the password isn't guessable.

Before running this I removed ms messenger, since I don't use it, and ran disk cleanup. AVG runs every day.

After several failed attempts, I was able to run Kasperian online scanner, nothing found.

This man is scary, and I'd sure appreciate any help.

Thanks, Ronda

Here's the two logs from DSS on my laptop. I'm trying to run Kasperian on my desktop as well, and will post as soon as I run everything through there.

Hello RondaFitz,

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. We aim to provide the valuable service known to come from BC to every member we can, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Upon completing the steps below, a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order, clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save to your Desktop.
alternate download site

DSS will do the following:
  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review.
  • Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes.
You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not
    malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad:
    • main.txt <- this one will be maximized
    • extra.txt <- this one will be minimized
  • If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder.
  • Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
-- When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that it is trying to access the Internet especially if your asked to download the most current version of HijackThis. Please ensure that you allow it permission to do so.
-- If you get a warning from your anti-virus while DSS is scanning, please allow DSS to continue as the scan is not harmful.

If you already preformed the steps above, we still need to see the current state of the machine. A fresh scan and logs are still necessary

Click on Start then Run
Copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
This will open up DSS configuration
Click on Check All
Click Scan
DSS will now run again when finished
Please post back both logs that open in notepad
Main txt and extra txt

Next
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Help us help you. If HelpBot replies, you MUST follow step 1 in its reply so we know you need help.

Orange blossom,

No need for apology! That you are willing to help is amazing. Thank you for your reply. Truly, if you would take a quick peek at what has been posted, I'm guessing the desktop is toast, but hopefully the laptop is ok. There are a lot of folks out here who need your help, I'm sure. I don't want to take up your time unnecessarily. If I have been compromised with Web Watcher, from what I've been able to determine, there's nothing you'll be able to do anyway. I'll just have to have the desktop reformated and reload everything.

I will repost dss and kaperssky results from the laptop as soon as they are complete.

Thanks,
Ronda

Hi again,

To avoid any confusion and miscommunication this reply will be covering your last DSS and Kaspersky logs and applies to the laptop only. If the logs of your desktop requires our attention too you may open a separate topic for the desktop.

  • Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

    http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now.
Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist:

    Viewpoint Media Player.

Also remove the folder in bold: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

  • We need to repair the file associations
    • Click Start and then Run to bring up the Run box.
    • Copy and paste the contents of this quote box into the run box:

      "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

    • Click OK.
    • Click OK to the prompt from Deckard's System Scanner.
    • Click Scan.
    • Place a tick next to the following entries (if they are present):
      .reg
      .scr
    • Click Fix
  • Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. (This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only)
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

  • Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
    Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

    In your next reply:
    • The scan results of F-Secure.
    • A fresh DSS log.

Hi Farbar,

A couple of things: RTS and GeoVision are programs I use for my business.
I uninstalled and deleted Veiwpoint, but had to restart to delete one of the files in the viewpoint folder.

No problems running ATF-cleaner.
Had a bit of trouble running fscan, but it did run in the end.

Also, at your request, I started a new thread for the desktop. This is all the laptop.

Will any of these scans show if a commercial surveillence program has been installed? I've seen where webwatcher, and it's commercial counterpart Sonar, (and presumably others that are even shadier) can be installed remotely, silently, and undetectably. This man has caused me so much harm, it would be nice to have some peace of mind that my systems are truly clean.

Thank you! Ronda

Hi RondaFitz,

Thanks for the detailed feedback about how it went.

Will any of these scans show if a commercial surveillence program has been installed? I've seen where webwatcher, and it's commercial counterpart Sonar, (and presumably others that are even shadier) can be installed remotely, silently, and undetectably.

Any software have traces in startup items, processes, services, registry, etc. Some might be hidden like rootkits and not detected by usual scanners.
We have run many top scanners: MBAM you had already run, Kaspersky Online Scanner, and F-Secure specially directed to detect rootkit activities. Besides, we have gone through the DSS and Hijackthis logs thoroughly to make sure there is no malicious activity is going on your system. They all seem clean and show no sign of any malware.

But your computer is still very much susceptible in particular to hacking and intrusion from outside. I strongly advise you to install a firewall before surfing. The windows firewall is not good enough. The Windows firewall provides protection from outside threats as long as the malware is not on your system. When the malware gets to your computer Windows firewall is no more effective. You find more information on firewalls below.

In order to reduce the possible infection in the future, you may follow the following steps:
  • First Set a New Restore Point then Remove the Old Restore Points to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

To set a new restore point:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
    • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
    • Give the Restore Point a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
To remove the old restore points:
    • Go to Start > Run then type: Cleanmgr in the box and click "OK".
    • Click the "More Options" Tab.
    • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
    • Click OK and Yes.
  • Sometimes the Privacy and Security are altered by the malware. Check and if needed reset them to default:
    • Open Internet explorer > Tools menu > Internet options.
    • Under privacy tab press default.
    • Under security tab press default.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software definitions and run the program on a regular basis.

  • Use a firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

There are several good free programs available like:
    Sunbelt-Kerio
    Comodo Firewall Pro
    Online Armor Free edition

  • Make sure you install all the security updates for Windows, Internet explorer & Microsoft Office.
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it to that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC, so keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Windows XP Service Pack 2 is now outdated. Microsoft has recently released Service Pack 3 which has more features and is more secure than Service Pack 2. You may update your Windows via Windows update.

Go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications.

  • Install Javacools© SpywareBlaster -
SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. You can find more information and a download link here.

  • Besides your Antivirus make use of Antispyware programs. I recommend the following antispyware programs to protect yourself against spyware, make sure you only use one real-time antispyware protection program besides your antivirus teal-time protection as running more than one real-time antispyware program may cause compatibility problems and effect the performance of your system negatively:
    SUPERAntiSpyware
    Spybot - Search and Destroy
    Ad-Aware 2007 Free

Thanks for your help Farbar. It's nice to have a little piece of mind about my laptop. Would it be ok to basically run the same game plan on my desktop?

I followed your instructions: 1) Completed restore point, removed old restore points. 2) Checked Privacy and Security settings in IE. Both were greyed out, which I'm hoping means they are sellected. 3) AVG update runs every time I turn on my computer (usually twice a day) and runs acomplete scan nearly daily. 4)I downloaded and will install the firewall. 5) I followed the link you had, and the result was automatic updates are on, finish was my only option. I know sp3 is out, is it something I have to go somewhere special to get? 6) spywareblaster is downloaded, and I will run after this. 7) I have lavasoft adaware and spybot s&d installed and run them every week or so. I don't know about the active ones.

I guess my question on the commercial surveilance software wasn't specific really. Have you ever found, or do you know anyone who's ever found WebWatcher or Sonar on their computer using these programs? From their website:
>>WebWatcher uses the most advanced invisibility technology currently available and can't be accessed by anyone except those authorized to use it. Our software doesn't appear in the Registry, the Process List, the System Tray, the Task Manager, on the Desktop, or in Add/Remove Programs. There aren't even visible files that can be seen. This means that the software can not be seen or turned off by anyone except you. And you won't have to worry about firewalls or anti-spyware software because WebWatcher performs an anti-virus and anti-spyware scan before installation to make sure that they don't cause any problems. <<

Their "specialists" claim they work with the developers of the software designed to find stuff to make sure it doesn't show up. I had no idea software like this was available for anyone to buy and use on any computer. Totally freaks me out.

I know I'm pry just being paranoid, but if you knew what this man has put me through, you would perhaps appreciate my concerns!

I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out with this. I didn't notice a donation link on your post. Is there a way I can help compensate you for your time and efforts?

Warmest Regards,
Ronda

Hi Ronda,

Thank again for your detailed feedback.

Would it be ok to basically run the same game plan on my desktop?

The fixes might be specific, I would wait on that. We are now speeding up handling the logs, the desktop log will be probably taken very soon.

I know sp3 is out, is it something I have to go somewhere special to get?

You can update by going to start > All Programs > Windows update > click on Custom button. You should get SP3 to be downloaded and installed.

I have lavasoft adaware and spybot s&d installed and run them every week or so. I don't know about the active ones.

They are not running at start up so it is OK.

I guess my question on the commercial surveillance software wasn't specific really. Have you ever found, or do you know anyone who's ever found WebWatcher or Sonar on their computer using these programs?

I don't know anyone who is using this program. I haven't come across any Hijackthis and malware cases yet that this program is installed without the consent of the user or for malicious purposes.

The fully invisible program is a fiction. The keyloggers might not be detected by Security programs when they are unknown or new and not malicious. If they become known and appear to be malicious the malware researchers find a way to detect and remove them.

I understand there is a reason for suspicious as you have gone through some painful experiences. I hope you get to the point to be able to let it go.

We are all volunteers and your appreciation is the best donation.
