Hello Vince86,

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan

Note that you need to run this scan with Internet Explorer for it to work correctly.

If you have any problem running the scan to completion, disable your Antivirus and/or firewall temporarily, just refrain from surfing around while the scan is running and be sure to re-enable when done.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

1. Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
2. A dialogue box will appear asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat step 1.
3. Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows Kaspersky to run.
4. If running MSAS beta you may receive an alert that an IE ActiveX program requires your approval. Click "Allow"
5. Wait for the scanner to initialize and update its databases. When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
6. Click "Scan Settings" and check the option to use the EXTENDED DATABASE,
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

then click "OK"
7. Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer" and the scan will begin.
8. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save Report As... button:

Posted Image

Under Save as type select Text file write name for the file and save it to your Desktop.
Locate the file at the Desktop, open it, then copy and paste that information in your next post.
9. Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply.

**********************

We need to create a Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) Log.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) from one of the links below and save to your Desktop.
Primary Mirror
Secondary Mirror

DSS will do the following:
1. Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
2. Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
3. Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review.
4. Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using Deckard's System Scanner.

1. Close all applications and windows.
2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.

3. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
4. When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad:
main.txt <-- Will be maximized
extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
5. If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder.
6. Please copy (<Control>+C) and paste (<Control>+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Note: When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that DSS is trying to access the Internet; especially if you are asked to download the most current version of HijackThis. Please ensure that DSS is given permission to access the internet.
Note: If you get a warning from your anti-virus while DSS is scanning, please allow DSS to continue as the scan is not harmful.

In your next reply, I need to see the following reports:
Kaspersky Webscan results
DSS Main.txt
DSS Extra.txt

Hi Vince,

Please run Deckard's System Scanner again, this time using these instructions:
(In the event you lost your copy, you can download a new one from here: Deckard's System Scanner http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe

Click on Start, click on Run
Copy and paste the following in the open window and then click OK:

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

This will open up DSS configuration
Uncheck all boxes in the Main log section
Check all boxes in the Extra log section
Click Scan.
DSS will now run again.
Please post back the Extra.txt log that opens in notepad.

Hi Vince86,

Your logs looks clean  but we still have to clean the system restore folder.

How is the computer running?

Its running a bit sluggish.. ie when i close firefox, the window collapses vertically very slow. I have disabled the system restore after i detected the trojans. And i haven't turned it back on. My computer has always been running slow, but i am guess its a RAM issue but i am not sure.

Hi Vance,

I have disabled the system restore after i detected the trojans. And i haven't turned it back on. My computer has always been running slow, but i am guess its a RAM issue but i am not sure.

When the computer is slow check the Task Manager.
Right-click an empty space on the system bar (grey bar at bottom of the screen) and select Task Manager.
Click the Processes tab and then click the heading CPU twice.
This will sort all processes top down by CPU usage (with the CPU hogs at the top).
Note that it is normal for System Idle Process to be in the high 90's, as that is your free ram.
Let me know what the high CPU users are.

Note that it is a bad idea to disable your System Restore before malware removal. Do NOT start your fix by disabling System Restore. This rule applies to any manual fixes and is especially true for spyware removal.
That is because disabling System Restore wipes out all restore points.
Should a problem arise during the fix you would have NO good working configuration to go back to get the computer up and running.
Even if you have to start over removing infections, this is preferable to a dead PC thanks to having System Restore turned off.
Clean the restore folder and set a new point AFTER the PC is clean and all programs are working properly.

I dont think we will find any malware, but lets try one more scanner. Sounds more like you have a memory, driver, hardware or applications problem.

Disable Spyware Doctor and Windows Defender before running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

If you encounter this message:"c:\program files\malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll Unable to register the dll/ocx: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x5" Click on ignore mbamext.dll

nothing found but do i need to run any other tests to make sure? I dont know if im just paranoid, but is it true that viruses/trojans etc. can still be in a computer even though the scans come out clean? I think i have read that they might be in the registry and other hard to find places that can't be scanned. Its just a general question. thanks

We looked at registry with HJT and DSS, so malware would show up.
Only rootkits can hide from us, but normally we see signs in DSS. Rootkit finders will usually find them, but see no need to on this computer.

So far I see no malware. This sounds like a RAM, applications, hardware or driver problem.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
