i left my cpu on overnight watching a movie, when i woke up the screen was black and it had the cursor. the cursor moves. I shutdown the cpu, restarted and it loads windows-sort of. as soon as the loading bar disappears and get to where the sign-on screen should be, its blank again with the cursor. it does this no matter what i have tried. so now im left with a $1600 mp3 charger. any suggestions before i wipe the HD?

A black screen normally (all the ones that I've seen) has no place where a cursor can move.

Do you mean that the cursor is blinking?

The most common issues with XP and the black screen involve the MBR (as hamluis states) and video driver. If the FIXMBR command doesn't remedy it, then I'd suggest installing new video drivers on your system.

Let us know the exact make and model of the MP3 charger ( ) and we'll likely be able to locate the driver for you.
