The most common issues with XP and the black screen involve the MBR (as hamluis states) and video driver. If the FIXMBR command doesn't remedy it, then I'd suggest installing new video drivers on your system.
Let us know the exact make and model of the MP3 charger (
) and we'll likely be able to locate the driver for you.
