Well I couldn't take hubby's comments (more like complaints) about his slow computer anymore and nuked the stupid thing last night (the computer - not the man). Very theraputic!

Anyhow, I've performed a clean install of XP and have run all the updates for Windows and IE7. Also all the drivers have been installed and updated. Now it's time to install a firewall and antivirus/antispyware software.

I could download CA Internet Security Suite but I think that was probably a big part of the computer's lack of speed. As it is, the poor thing is only a Dell GX60 (Celeron 1.7GHz) with 2GB RAM.

What firewalls do you like and recommend?

Thanks in advance!

PS - y'all rock! I've gotten solid information from this form and you've saved the day for me many times.

I am not a fan of security suites for that very reason (and additional considerations).

Several very good, and free, firewalls are listed here:

While there are many opinions about their relative merits, I have used both Sygate and Commodo with very good results.

Choosing a firewall is a matter of personal preference, your technical ability/experience, features offered, the amount of resources utilized, how it may affect system performance and what will work best for your system. A particular firewall that works well for one person may not work as well for another. You may need to experiment and find the one most suitable for your use.

As what quietman7 said it is based on personal prefrence.
You can take a look at here for some free firewalls: http://www.filehippo.com/software/firewalls/
