I am not sure where to begin, but here goes, a friend of mine, or used to be, gave me a web addy and I went there, and it tried to make me download some kind of player to see videos, and something just ravaged my desktop computer, I am now on my laptop.

By the time on the toolbar it says, virus alert!! when I boot up and try to load IE it is slow and takes me to some bogus spyware removal site, and keeps throwing up a infection dialogue...task manager is disabled and I cannot get to my programs control panel or anything. What a mess....I can run my spyware from yahoo, and it will remove the desktop icons that were loaded with this "crap"! It also removed icons for 2 or 3 tools I had, evidence eliminator and pc pitstop which was very good. When I run my AVG scan it get to a certain point in the scan and just repeats itself over and over again.

I called Plum Choice Online support, I heard of them on XM radio, and they tried to access my computer to fix it, but this "crap would not allow the program to load to fix. Plus I have no high speed other than my Sprint USB 595U card and outdoor antenna which works very well, but it will not work in safe mode...so it appears I am screwed here according to Plum Choice I will have to take to Best Buy Geek Squad, which could be real pricy, I was able to get to my control panel and programs in safe mode, but not through the startup tab....i am really pulling my hair out here, I have a home business and very little of it is on my laptop!!! I am seriously frustrated and pissed, but it is my fault for going to that damn URL..plus it through up a bunch of garbage that looked like windows stuff that I clicked and I know now it was PHONY TOO!!

hope someone can help here...remember I am no technician...laymans terms would be helpful....

Have you tried running your AVG scan in Safe Mode?

will it restore my setting in the start menu?

No.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Reagardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

thanks quietman, I will try this indeed....if it will allow me to get to internet explorer...it did once yesterday, but very slow, and when it loads it takes me to some bogus software download, which I will not do, they are just phishing......I will get back to ya when I get my desktop reassembled..now I should do this in a regular boot right??? because I only have a wireless USB air card broadband connection, and safe mode will not work....won't load connection program from Sprint.

Thanks

Some malware can alter/corrupt all sorts of registry keys. I don't know at this point if that's whats going on but don't worry about it now. The priority should be to clean your computer.

I should do this in a regular boot right??? because ...safe mode will not work

Yes. Only scan in normal mode.

If you cannot use your Internet to download, you are going to need access to another computer (family member, friend, etc) with an Internet connection. Download MBAM, save it to a flash (usb, pen, thumb, jump) drive or CD, transfer it to the infected machine, then install and run the program. If it does not run from the machine or you cannot transfer it, try running MBAM directly from the flash drive.

Depends on what kind of software you have for working with CDs. I normally just download and save programs to my CD's the same way I save them to my usb stick.

so do it just like I am making a music cd on my dvd cd burner program...then simply run the cd in my infected computer??

also did you see my question about not being able to minimize explorer web page on my notebook, how can I change that setting??

UPDATE....I ran my Registry Mechanic in safe mode and did a system restore and some of my info has come back, at least I have a toolbar now, but still have no programs available in the start menu, next I am going to try to run a virus scan with AVG in safe mode, now that I can get to it from the toolbar...

Thanks sir

Hello ashgarth

If you have an issue or problem you would like to discuss, please start your own topic. Doing that will help to avoid the confusion that often occurs when trying to help two or more members in the same thread with different problems. Even if your problem is similar to the original poster's problem, the solution could be different based on the kind of hardware, software, system requirements, etc. you are using and the presence of other malware. Further, posting for assistance in someone else's topic is not considered proper forum etiquette.

Thanks for your cooperation.
