Hello Help Me 101!
Listed on this page http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/dvdcdburning.shtml
are free software that allow you to burn to or master (ie, write) CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW discs.

DeepBurner is also a good software, personal version is about $24 bucks I think.
But they have do limited free version http://www.deepburner.com/?r=products&pr=provsfree

Here is their FAQs http://www.deepburner.com/?r=support&pr=faq
Can be of use to you even if you'll not buy the soft ;)

They all take a while, if you burn as a true DVD. Its the encoding part that takes forever. If you want a great long term investment, pick up a DVD player with the DiVX logo on it, then you can burn them as data disks, in .avi format. cost you about 40 bucks.
Like a true DVD format disk will hold 2 movies if you're lucky, and take at least a couple of hours to burn. A DiVx disk will hold a TON, up to 7 full length movies. and takes between 5 and 15 minutes to burn. Of course smaller files means more on the disk, I made the kids a disk with 38 half hour episodes of their shows. 19 freakin hours lol
