If I download the Acronis 15 day trial from http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/trueimage/ use it to make a backup & then need to use that backup to recover my computer in , say 6 months time how does that work? as the trial is only for 15 days . Surely I'll be stuck with an Acronis image I can't use . Please can someone enlighten me ?

I'm not sure I'm understanding what you are asking? You want a 15 day trial to work with full functionality without paying for it in 6 months?

A 15 day trial is just that. Try it for 15 days, if you like it, buy it. Do not have the expectation it will work as advertised during the 15 day trial 6 months down the road. I can guarantee you you will be sadly disappointed.

If you want Freeware alternatives for the software you mention check our list of Freeware Replacements For Common Commercial Apps

Scroll down to File/Folder Utilities there are a few.

The bootable rescue cd that you can build from the trial can only perform a restoration. I tried the Acronis trial a couple of years ago had a problem and was able to restore from the trial cd after the trial expired. I purchased the application and have been quite satisfied. A six month old image is pretty useless. Kinda like a chocolate teapot.
