You are currently using hijackthis from a temp directory. This can cause problems. Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis and download and unzip hijackthis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on.

For a tutorial on how to use HijackThis please see the following link:

Using HijackThis to Remove Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and Dialers

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1C044AAD-7955-4cbd-8175-501A165C4E5D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: req - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dll

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dll

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Thanks so much Lawrence.
My original problem of hyperlinks not working has now been fixed. However I seem to have unwanted search pages coming up occasionally even though I have a pop up blocker installed and selected. Would someone please look at my latest Hijackthis log below and advise if any further amendments need to be made.
Thanks very very much,
Piers

I need to get samples of some of your files. Please create a folder called c:\submit. Now copy the following files into that directory:

C:\WINDOWS\msagent\cmc.dll

To copy the files simply navigate to the directory they are in and right click on the file name, and then click on copy option. Now go back to the c:\submit folder and right click in the folder and select the paste option.

Once the files are all copied zip the folder and rename submit.zip to yourmembername.zip (for example grinler.zip). If you are using XP or ME right-click on the folder and click on the Send To option and then send it to a Compressed folder. You will now see a file called yourmembername.zip. If you are using another version of Windows, please download a program called Winzip and zip it using that.

When the files are zipped, go to:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php
and fill in the required fields and browsing to the file you are submitting Finally click on the Send File button.

Just so you know there is no easy solution to this yet. But we will see what we can do. Go into my computer and right click onthe c drive and then properties. What type of filesystem do you have?

Also what letter is your cd drive? Do you have a c:\i386 directory?

Put the xp cd in the drive. Click on start, then run, and type d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons and press enter. This will install the recovery console. So when you reboot you will see a new menu option called the recovery console. Select that option when it boots and hopefully it wont ask for a password. if it does ask for a password, try press enter for no password. Then when youare at the prompt, type:

attrib -s -h -r C:\WINDOWS\msagent\cmc.dll

and press enter.

Then type

del -s -h -r C:\WINDOWS\msagent\cmc.dll

and press enter.

Reboot and post a new log. Let me know if you run into any problems.

HI lawrence,
Also when I click on d:\i386\winnt32.exe it says that this is a previous version of windows and cannot install without losing the updated version (service pack 2) which was updated online.
Regards,
Piers

Step 1:

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from HERE

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from HERE

Step 2:

Download the file and save it to your desktop:

FixVundo Registry File

Step 3:

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of cmc.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the cmc.dll's under winlogon click OK.

If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well

Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of INSERT DLL HERE then click the kill button.

If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B8B55274-0F9A-41E5-9067-A3539BD9E860} - C:\WINDOWS\msagent\cmc.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: cmc - C:\WINDOWS\msagent\cmc.dll

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved on your desktop earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.

Step 4:

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the delete on reboot button.

Enter the following filepath and filename into the Full path of file to delete box

C:\WINDOWS\msagent\cmc.dll

Click the red circle with the white x and say yes to the delete prompt but no to reboot now
then repeat with any of the reverse named .bak or .ini files

after you have input the last file name then reboot

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

Wooohooo!! I would like to say that the task I gave can be very daunting to some people and you did a terrific job!

Log looks clean...great job!

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Next,

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Glad I was able to help.
