I have a Compaq HP Laptop, I think it has a Core duo processor. Someone was playing a game on the computer, and it randomly shut the computer down, when we tried to reboot it it would constantly have the recharge LED on and the Read HDD LED on, but the power LED never showed. I removed the batteries (both) and it started and began to run chkdsk, but stopped at 27% on step 2, so i had to reboot. Now The computer will start, it will allow me to enter the CMOS, but when it tries to boot an OS, it shows "Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready." It does this even with a bootable cd in and the boot order changed around. I tried to reset the CMOS, that didn't help, it could load the disc before. The harddrive doesn't seem to be running.

Can you boot to the CD by using the boot menu? (press "Esc" at the first screen that shows up)

I find that sometimes the BIOS must reflect the same thing for all 3 boot options...before a bootable CD will be properly detected and run.

You might try it, only takes a minute.

When chkdsk is run and is halted...that's usually a bad sign. If you can, I suggest running chkdsk /r and letting it complete, no matter how long it takes. If it cannot handle something, it will present an error message and advise.

i have really limited bios options, there is no quick boot menu available. Chkdsk doesn't show up anymore, basically no matter what i do a cd won't boot. The splash screen seems like it shows up for longer than it should, then it shows the error message. the hdd won't spin up either, i want to remove it but i can't find a screwdriver small enough.
