Hello and welcome to BC

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. We aim to provide the valuable service known to come from BC to every member we can, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Upon completing the steps below a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save to your Desktop.
alternate download site

DSS will do the following:
  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review.
  • Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes.
You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not
    malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad:
    • main.txt <- this one will be maximized
    • extra.txt <- this one will be minimized
  • If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder.
  • Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
-- When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that it is trying to access the Internet especially if your asked to download the most current version of HijackThis. Please ensure that you allow it permission to do so.
-- If you get a warning from your anti-virus while DSS is scanning, please allow DSS to continue as the scan is not harmful.

If you already preformed the steps above We still need to see the current state of the machine fresh scan and logs are still necessary

click on Start, click on Run
copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
This will open up DSS configuration
click on Check All
click Scan
DSS will now run again when finished
Please post back both logs that open in notepad
Main txt and extra txt

Next
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hello again MikHornet,

1.)

Your AVG anti-spyware is out of date and your AVG anti-virus will not be supported anymore after the end of the month.

We first need to do an uninstall by following these instructions: Add/Remove Programs.
Then finding AVG 7.5 and choosing to delete it. Do the same for any other AVG you find.

After completing this please do the following:

For a free version of AVG-8.0
Click on this link: AVG
  • Underneath AVG Anti-Virus Free click on Download
  • Click on AVG 8.0 Free for Windows
  • Click on Download
  • A window will open. Click on Save File-A window will open. Click on Next
  • Click on Accept
  • Make sure standard install is checked and click Next
  • You can enter your name and click Next
  • click Finish After install is complete click OK
  • Follow prompters to update and check for viruses

2.)

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer
or file-sharing programmes (in your case Limewire ).
These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime
has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of
the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care.
Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer"
and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology.

3.)

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

4.)

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt

Thanks,

Hi,

first of all, thanks for all the help, I really appreciate what you guys are doing on the forum.
I've followed the steps you've written, reinstalled to the new version of AVG (by the way do you think it is a good choice, or are there any free Antiviruses you'd recommand?), run the ATF Cleaner, and then the Combofix and i'm posting you the report below.
Thanks again,

M.

Hey,
just an update - the computer just failed to boot, so I got the windows rostore to the last 'good' conrfiguration (which was probably just before using Combofix?). So I assume none of the things done afterwards are still in effect. I am thinking about giving the PC a whole new Vista reinstall, do you think it is a good idea, would it solve my problems? The PC is now slower then ever, it takes some 15 seconds to open a windows explorer window.
Please advise. Thanks,

M.

Hi,

Although a reformat is always an option and the decision is up to you we would like you to rerun ComboFix and see what it shows.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • When completed post the new ComboFix text in your next reply
If you choose not to do this please let me know

Thanks,

Hi there,

Thanks for all the help, but apparently the problem's been fixed, as my collegue had a person to come over and fix it. Besides for getting rid of the bug, he also cleaned up the inside of the machine itself (as it started to turn itself off on its own every once in a while lately - probably because of overheating). Everything is working ok now and is as fast as never before
Anyway, I'd really like to thank you for your help and all your time. Wish you all the best,

Michal

Glad you were able to get everything straightened out and that we were able to help some. In answer to your previous question concerning AVG, I personally have found it to be a good program, but like everything else it must be kept updated and used in conjunction with other programs. Below is a list of things to do which can help you keep from getting reinfected:

Another thing to keep in mind is that although you have Window's internal firewall, this only provides one way protection for your computer. Below is a couple of free firewalls that will monitor both incoming and outgoing traffic. Just remember to only use one and disable the Windows if you decide to pick another one.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will be reduced dramatically.

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall -
* I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
* Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over.
* Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
* For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
* Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
* I would recommend ZoneAlarm as a firewall as it's easy to use.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently -
* It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
* This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
* If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Next, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs, and the updating of them regularly

Install Spybot© - Search and Destroy- Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
* This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
* You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software.
* A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

Install SUPERAntiSpyware - Install and download SUPERAntiSpyware .
* You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot.
* Information on installing & using this product can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->SUPERAntiSpyware official site

Install Javacools© SpywareBlaster -
* SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
* A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

If you have any addition questions just ask...

Thanks,
