I'm new to the board, I stumbled across it while researching a problem. A few days ago I began having problems with a "buffer overflow" that would not allow me open Internet Explorer. I downloaded a patch that allowed me to get back into Internet Explorer. However, now everytime I reboot my computer Windows Explorer automatically comes up with a file named "helper.sig" in C/Program Files/Common. After running a McAfee virus scan, it found a program called DeepDive. I checked for McAfee to delete this (which it did) but Windows Explorer still comes up everytime I reboot. Other than this, I am not having any problems with my PC, but am a little concerned that something could be going on behind the scenes that I don't know about. I have copied a Hijack This log file below, if anyone could help I'd be grateful. Thanks!

Hi pope17,

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")
Then follow the instructions here to clear your Java cache.

Now, we need to backup your registry:
Please go to Start > Run
Paste in the following line:regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg
Click OK.
It won't appear to be doing anything, that's normal.
Your mouse pointer may turn to an hour glass for a minute.
Please continue when it no longer has the hour glass.

Registry Fix

Please open up an instance of Notepad.
  • Click on:
    • Start, then
    • All Programs, then
    • Accessories, then
    • Notepad
  • Copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad

    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{bca94556-f465-49f5-93ab-e71199a64363}]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]
    "CLSID"=-

  • Save it as "All Files" and name it RemoveFilter.reg. Let the location be your desktop.
  • Navigate to your desktop.
  • Double click RemoveFilter.reg
  • A window will prompt you to Merge RemoveFilter.reg with the Windows Registry, this is normal. Choose Yes/Ok.
Open Hijack This and do a "Scan Only". Put a check mark next to the following entries.

Click on "Fix checked",and close the program.

Then reboot and see if you can find this file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll

Delete it if present.

Run HijackThis again and post the new log.

I removed the last file you mentioned as well. However, Windows Explorer still comes up with this "helper.sig" in C/Program Files/Common still when I reboot. Its more of an annoyance than a problem as long as nothing else serious is going on. Thanks for taking a look.

The only thing I can think of could cause that is:
O2 - BHO: Windows Live Sign-in Helper - {9030D464-4C02-4ABF-8ECC-5164760863C6} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Windows Live\WindowsLiveLogin.dll

In IE7 click Tools and select Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons
In the screen that follows find the Browser Helper Object (in the type field) for Windows Live and disable it.
Also check in the File column if you find one called helper.sig and if present disable that as well.

Then reboot and try if that worked.

Never mind my last post. I found some more information.

I'd like to do some search for the root of the problem.

1. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the contents of the quote box below into a new Notepad file. Save it with file name options.txt and save as file type: all files to your desktop.

RegSearch Options File

[Exclude]

[Options]
Filter=KVDLU



2. Download Registry Search to your desktop.
  • Right click on the compressed RegSearch folder, and choose "Extract All". In the box that pops open, click "Next", then "Next" again, and then "Finish". You now have another RegSearch folder on your desktop.
  • Open the new folder, and double click on regsearch.exe
  • Click "Import" in the lower left corner and browse to the options.txt file that you just saved on your desktop. Do not choose the one in the RegSearch folder itself.
  • Click OK and Registry Search will scan your registry for the file(s), and a Notepad box will open with a report.
  • Please reply here with the entire contents of the Notepad file from RegSearch.

That didn't help, so it's not getting started from the registry.

Let's see if we can find out this way.

Click Start > Run > type cmd in the box > click OK

In the Command prompt type
ASSOC .sig
and hit ENTER
Let me know the response. Probably File association not found for extension .sig,
but I'm hoping for something more useful.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

Download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.
