I was given a Belkin USB 2.0 4-Port Hub with no power supply. (It is supposed to be powered by 5V DC.) Will I risk damaging something if I connect it between, say, a printer or other non-powered USB device and my computer?

USB Hubs can be powered and UNpowered.

If you connect alot of devices which draw power from USB bus(motherboard) like mouse, keyboard, flash drives, cameras, cellphones etc, then you need power supply.

If you connect devices which have their own power (printer, webcam, router etc) then u dont need power supply.

Typically connecting 1 or 2 devices that take power from USB bus wont matter.

The only problem that can happen is that devices may stop working owing to lack of power being supplied to them.
