Hi! I hope you can help my poor computer. I've done quite a bit of private research and scanning with various anti-virus/spyware programs, and though I can reverse some of the effects of this malware for a bit, it seems to be regrouping in some hidden portion of my PC and coming back with a vengeance in no time. Okay, so, list of symptoms:

My clock now reads military time with the message VIRUS ALERT! next to it.

Sets my homepage to http://www.ucleaner.com/main.php?wmid=6010&mid=MjI6Mjo4OQ==&lndid=2 and tries to force me there when I open my web browser. My anti-spyware programs block the site. Also attempts to visit either this or some other website on a regular basis by periodically hijacking my browser - this site, if different, is also being blocked by my security measures.

Disables the Task Manager and Regedit.exe. Removes the Search and Run functions from my Start menu, as well as the all programs button, and a smattering of other things (Control Panel also, I think.) These effects are reversible, but only temporarily, as the virus returns to take vengeance.

Runs a few annoying pop-up Applications - "Spyware Alert" and "Windows Security Alert". These two appear to be system message windows describing the various horrible things going on in my system and trying to get me to click "ok" or "yes" to do gawd knows what. Haven't clicked either. Right clicking and choosing "Go to Process" in windows task manager (which I can get to work for periods of time) reveal that the Windows Security Alert is related to csrss.exe and the Spyware Alert is related to explorer.exe.

Minimized program tabs blink orange periodically, as if they were reporting something.

Hides my c: drive (hard drive) and d: drive (optical drive) in My Computer.

It changed my desktop backround to a plain white screen - once. Oddly, once I fixed this (don't remember how I did it), this particular symptom has never happened again.

I might add that several runs of AVG have found Trojan type viruses.

Alright, that's a list of symptoms. Probably not exhaustive, but it's what I have noticed. Below I will paste the text files generated by Deckard's System Scanner:

Hello Twilightprince and welcome to BC. Let's see what we can find. Follow the steps below in order:

Before running a new scan let's clean out the temporary folders.

Download ATF Cleaner to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser, do this also:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Close ALL Internet browsers (very important).
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Now download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.

Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanIt folder and double-click on OTScanIt.exe to start the program (if you are running on Vista then right-click the program and choose Run as Administrator).
  • In the Drivers section click on Non-Microsoft.
  • Under Additional Scans click the checkboxes in front of the following items to select them:
    • Reg - BotCheck
      Reg - Desktop Components
      Reg - Software Policy Settings
      File - Additional Folder Scans
  • copy/paste the text in the codebox below into the Custon Scans box:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\International
  • Do not change any other settings.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
  • Save the file to your desktop or other location where you can find it back.
Use the Add Reply button and attach the file in your next post (do not try to copy/paste it into the post).

Cheers.

Thanks for your help - attached is the scan you requested. This scan took only a few seconds - I think less than a minute. Is this correct?

Hi Twilightprince. Ok, let's see what we can do. Follow the steps below in order:

Step #1

Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
%systemroot%\emxf.exe
%systemroot%\evgratsm.dll
%systemroot%\kvxqmtre.dll
%systemroot%\qndsfmao.dll
c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\microsoft\network\downloader\qmgr0.dat
c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\microsoft\network\downloader\qmgr1.dat
Folders to delete:
%programfiles%\vav
%systemroot%\privacy_danger

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Click in the window labeled Input Scrupt Here and paste the text copied to the clipboard into it by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click the Execute button
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
Step #2

Start OTScanIt. Copy/Paste the information in the codebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup either telling you that it is finished, or that a reboot is needed to complete the fix. If the fix is complete, click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that log back here in your next reply.

If a reboot is required, click the "Yes" button to reboot the machine. After the reboot, OTScanIt will finish moving any files that could not be moved during the fix and NotePad will open with the final results at that time. Post that log back here in your next reply.

Step #3

Now let's run an online virus scan. Both of these require Internet Explorer. Try F-Secure first. Sometimes it doesn't play nice with other system components so if it cannot complete then try the Kaspersky scan. You only need to complete one of the two.

Run the F-Secure Online Scanner

Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
  • Click on Online Services and then Online Scanner
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
If the F-Secure scan did not work then try an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Step #4

Run a new OTScanIt scan with the following options

Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanIt folder and double-click on OTScanIt.exe to start the program (if you are running on Vista then right-click the program and choose Run as Administrator).
  • Under Additional Scans click the checkboxes in front of the following items to select them:

    • Reg - BotCheck
      File - Additional Folder Scans
  • Do not change any other settings.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it and close Notepad (save changes if necessary).
  • Close OTScanIt and locate the OTScanIt.txt file in the folder where OTScanIt.exe is located.
  • Attach that file back here in your next reply.
Step #5

Copy/paste the following back here in your next reply:
  • The Avenger report (c:\Avenger.txt)
  • The latest OTScanIt fix log (look in the OTScanIt folder for the MovedFiles folder. In that folder will be a file with a name in the form of mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log for month, day, year, hours, minutes, and seconds that the scan was run. )
  • The online virus scan report (whichever one you ran)
Attach the following back here in your next reply:
  • The new OTScanIt scan log
I will review the information when it comes back in.

Also let me know of any problems you encountered performing the steps above or any continuing problems you are still having with the computer.

Cheers.

Thanks so much, things appear to be running much more smoothly. One question: Where in the registry do I set my homepage? It's still set to the bad guys' site. ;)

Also, here are the reports you requested:

Hi Twilightprince. Everything in the logs look good. You should be able to change the home page through the Options settings. Go to the page you want to use as your home page and hten click Tools -> Internet Optopns. On the General tab under the Home group click the Use Current button. Then click the Apply and Ok buttons to save the changes and close the setting box.

If that does not work let me know. Otherwise, go ahead and run the system normally for a couple of days and then get back with me and let me know if there are any continuing issues. If everything is Ok at that time, then we have some final cleanup to do and you'll be good to go.

Cheers.

Ah, excellent, thanks. One more question about some software I have here. I have a game CD with a file on it that some of my antivirus programs detect as a trojan. I've now come to learn that this is actually the copy protection software - starforce. I've read a few bad things about this program - do you happen to know whether this software is legit, or sohuld I just leave it alone?

Hi Twilightprince. Yes, there are two driver files that were shown installed and running for that copyprotection. It really isn't either good or bad. It just is. If, when installing the game, it notified you of the copyprotection and that it would install those on your system then it can't really be considered as illegal or bad. People kind of have a bad perception of copyprotection from the Sony scandle where Sony installed a protection mechanism that they did not inform users of and that hid various system files and registry entries and interfered with other applications because of that. It was kind of found by chance and once the cat was out of the bag the crap hit the fan so to speak lol.

I would say if you enjoy the game and the protection isn't bothering you or the functioning of the computer then don't worry about it. Enjoy the game. If knowing that the copyprotection is on the system and it is an issue with you because you do not want it to be there then uninsall the game and look for something else that suits your fancy.

Talk to you in a couple of days.

Ok, well, everything seems to be running as normal at this point. You mentioned some cleanup left to do? What exactly would that entail?

Thanks,
Twilightprince

Glad to hear it Twilightprince. Then let's do some final cleanup to reset the System Restore points and remove all of the tools we used during the fix and then you are all set.

Step #1

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Step #2

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:
  • Start OTScanIt
    Click the CleanUp button
  • OTScanIt will download a small file from the Internet. If a security program or firewall warns you of this allow it to download.
  • OTScanIt will delete any tools downloaded and files/folders created and then ask you to reboot so it can remove itself. Click Yes.
After that you are good to go.

Cheers and Happy Computing!
