I know that plenty of schools have a career department with counselorss that specialize in helping students with their careers but I am looking for a counselor who is not affiliated with a school who has IT knowledge.

How do I find a career counselor with an IT background who isn't affiliated with a school?

AN often-overlooked source for understanding career options is the IT department of large companies. Often a letter to the CIO asking for an interview and stating the general questions you might have will result in your sitting down with a qualified person who has a lot of practical knowledge and can provide experienced advice. Naturally you should come prepared with your questions so as not to waste his or hers time.
