Did you install the drivers after you installed XP (and all of the Windows updates)?
Go to Start...Run...and type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Are there any devices with red X's or yellow !'s?

In particular, there's an issue with some systems that have High Definition Audio - which requires an update from Microsoft BEFORE installing the High Definition Audio drivers.

Please let us know the exact make and model of the system so we can do some more research on this.

There are six different models listed for the model you noted, http://search.hp.com/query.html?cc=us&...1000+&la=en . The above drivers seem to be the most popular model...it won't hurt to verify that it's your model before using.
