Hello All. Hope everyne has a drink handy like I do.

So this is our home computer that my wife and 4 year old use while I'm at work. Wife uses it for scholl, child for games. It an XP Pro/Media box and has always been fairly stable. Around Late thursday or Friday (When I noticed it) the startup began hanging during or right beofre log-in. It would eventually continue after a minute or so and act normally until the desktop came up. Then it locks up. Everything is there, but clicking folders or the start menu does nothing. I can't even get task manager to pop up. After what seems like 5-10 minutes, everything is normal again. I have also noticed that my fan seems to be running more, but I'll clean out the box tomorrow. (I doubt it's that dirty) Anyone interested in a free six pack if they solve this? Logs attached and below. First time poster so be gentle.

I updated and ran:

Lavasoft Ad-aware
Grisoft AVG
PC-Tools Spyware Doctor
Executive Software Diskeeper 2004(Defrag)

No major hits.....Tracking cookies and recent history files only. Plenty or room on the HD as well. (2) 250 Gig RAID at 30% capacity. And believe it or not, no pron surfing that I know of.

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.
Here's the good news. I don't see any indication of malware in your log. But I do see some things that we can do to help you out.

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs and uninstall these programs:

BigFix <-- huge resource hog and it doesn't really provide much benefit
Norton Security Scan <-- another resource hog and you shouldn't run this along with AVG 8
Viewpoint Media Player <-- foistware

You are running an older version of Java. This can be a security risk so let's get you the latest version.
Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Buckeye_Sam,

Thanks for the advice. I ended up starting in safe mode and re-running every virus scan program I had before. It (Ad-Aware) removed 1 questionalble file related to Antivirus, but nothing else was found. Strange.

I'm going to do the things you recomended later tonight and hopefully the system will run smoother. Thanks a bunch for helping with this one. I came to bleepingcomputer because about a week ago, I was infected on my work laptop with the blue screen "Virus detected" etc... desktop screen and the forums helped me fix the problem. Awesome comunity here.

Thanks Again,

Gavin
