I was referred here after I entred this problem in the main forum. Yahoo Antispy is the only program that is detecting this trojan, and can't remove it. When I try to remove it using Antispy, I get the message "Cannot quarantine - administrative rights may be required to quarantine this item".
I am the administrator, I am the only one using the computer, and always open programs with |"run as administrator"Yahoo Antispy is the only program that is detecting this trojan, and can't remove it.
Yahoo Antispy gave the location as

hkey_classes_root\interface\{5ce8d2b6-fde7-41d1-b563-b8e03ee008b9

(for the dowritn af trojan)

The moderator advised that this is a backdoor trojan and I should post the DSS scan here. Thanks in anticipation of your response and advice on how to remove it from my system.

Hello iacorsl. Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

First of all, please save these instructions in Notepad to your Desktop, or print them, for easy reference. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Next, we need to disable your protection programs as they may interfere with the fixes we will be making.
You can re-enable them after your computer is clean.

Windows Defender
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools>>Options
  • Scroll down to: Real time protection options and UNcheck Use real-time protection (recommended)
  • Click save>>close.
SpySweeper

Open the program, click > Options over to the left then > Program Options > Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

Spybot

Please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

SuperAntiSpyware

Open the program>>click Real Time Protection tab>>Uncheck real time.

Now we’ll run Malwarebytes again.

Please locate, then double-click Malwarebytes click Update tab>>>Check for Updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has finished updating it will close.
  • Re-open Malwarebytes, then select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a location you will remember.
  • Copy and Paste that log into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Hello jacorsl

Your logs look clean.
Now we have some tidying up to do, and we’ll do an online scan to make sure we have not missed anything.

First of all, please save these instructions in Notepad to your Desktop, or print them, for easy reference. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Please re-open HijackThis and choose Do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HijackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your Desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 7...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Plattform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "English".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your Desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your Desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Please Post:

Kaspersky Report
A new HijackThis log.
And let me know if you have any remaining problems.

Thanks again, here is the latest H.J.T. and Kaspersky scan.

There are infected files showing in the kaspersky scan, 4 of them in a quarantine folder, but the main problem I initially reported - the Dowritn AF trojan picked up by Yahoo Anti Spy, - and only being reported anywhere on the internet by the company that supply this program (www.ca.com) is not showing up.

This trojan is apparently not a False Positive according to the initial reply I got from this forum as it appears in the registry?

Hello jacorsl

the Dowritn AF trojan picked up by Yahoo Anti Spy

Both Malwarebytes and Kaspersky scan the Registry.
If this trojan was on your computer, they would have found it.
Please see here
CA.com states that Kaspersky identifies it as: Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Adload.ze.

Now, let’s clean the last six infected files.

Please save these instructions in Notepad to your Desktop, or print them, for easy reference.

Please uninstall:

DrWebCureIt

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):

C:\Deckard\System Scanner\backup\Users\owner\AppData\Local\Temp\Example1\Stay clean and confident with Exterminate It! (16843-2).exe<<<this file
C:\Downloads\alt.binaries.boneless\Stay clean and confident with Exterminate It! .exe (001_004)\Stay clean and confident with Exterminate It! .exe<<<this file.

I suggest you reset System Restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point that was created earlier.

To Reset System Restore Points
  • Click Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools, click System Restore
  • Check Create a restore point
  • Click Next, then name the Restore Point
  • Click Create
  • When the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created, click Close
  • Click Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools, click Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup will open and begin to calculate the amount of space that can be freed.
Once that is finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen.
Click the More Options tab, then click Clean up on the System Restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all previous restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files.
Click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Finally: Please run Kaspersky again.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Note: As you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add or Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

  • Copy and paste that information in your next post, along with a new HijackThis log.

White Warrior.

Here are the logs from Kaspersky and HJT. Thanks. Just one further thing, in my first post detailing the Dowritn AF trojan found by Yahoo Anti spy, the person addressing the issue said it was definitely a trojan problem, and referred me to this forum for a solution. Was the initial advisor possibly wrong? I am obviously concerned that the other antispy/virus detection programs may not be picking it up, and Yahoo Antispy is finding it. The ca.com site states it is a very high risk trojan? Thanks again for your extensive help with this.

Hello jacorsl

I understand your concern over the Dowritn AF trojan.
Is Yahoo Anti spy still detecting it on your system?
Could you please give me its exact path.

the person addressing the issue said it was definitely a trojan problem

And they were correct. You did have several trojans on the computer.

DrWebCureIt found this trojan:
C:\Users\owner\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\pm70.exe Infected: Trojan.Win32.VB.aup 1

Malwarebytes found this trojan in the registry.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ModuleU
sage\c:/windows/downloaded program files/puren-gb.dll (Trojan.Agent)

Kaspersky found this trojan in a file:
Files Infected:
C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files\PURen-gb.dll (Trojan.Agent) ->

I also asked one of our Administrators to check your logs, and he agrees that your logs look clean.

If you wish to do further on line scans, they are available at:
Panda
Bit Defender
F Secure

Please read the following suggestions to make your computer more secure, and to help prevent possible future infections.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Update regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Update all your programs regularly -Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thanks again for your further responses.

Could you please give me its exact path.

Yahoo Antispy gave the location as

hkey_classes_root\interface\{5ce8d2b6-fde7-41d1-b563-b8e03ee008b9

This is the same path that was detailed in the original yahoo antispy detection 3 weeks ago, and yahoo antispy seems to be the only program detecting this problem.

It will still not remove/quarantine it, also saying I need administrator rights. I am logged as the administrator and am the only person that uses the computer.

Hello jacorsl

Well, let’s have a look at this key, and see what is under it.

Now, please open Notepad and Copy/Paste the following text into Notepad. Do NOT copy the word “quote.”

@ECHO OFF

REGEDIT.exe /E "%userprofile%\Desktop\key.txt" "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{5ce8d2b6-fde7-41d1-b563-b8e03ee008b9}"

exit

Save the file to the Desktop as Trojan.bat and make sure the Save as type field says All files.
Locate Trojan.bat on the Desktop and double-click on it to run it.

It will produce a file on the Desktop named key.txt

Please post that log back to me.
