My IE browser has been hijacked constantly over the past month or so. Ad-Aware is unable to fix the problem. Microsoft's beta AntiSpyware program seemed to detect and get rid of the problem about 3 weeks ago - but it came back - now it neither detects nor gets rid of the problem.

I hope that an expert here can go through the log below and help me.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Jonat! My name is Kat, and I'll be helping you to get your computer cleaned back up!

You may want to print these instructions to make it easier to follow along, or save them to a Notepad file on your desktop.

1. You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer into normal windows.

2. Download and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings
(Please ensure you have version 1.3 final.)
Home - The home of Spybot-S&D!: http://www.safer-networking.org/
Here is a nice Tutorial http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=tutorial
  • Go to Start > Programs >Spybot Search & Destroy and choose 'Spybot S&D'
  • Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
  • Click the button 'Search for Updates' and download and install the Updates.
  • Next click the button 'Check for Problems'
  • When Spybot is complete, it will be showing 'RED' entries BLACK entries and GREEN entries in the window
  • Make sure there is a check mark beside the RED entries ONLY.
  • Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
  • REBOOT
3. Open your AdAware program, and make sure you have the newest updates, then run it again.

Reboot your computer after all of these steps are done, and scan for another HijackThis log, and paste the new log here in a reply.

PLEASE NOTE: This will not totally clean your system up, this is just the first steps to take. We will have a bit more to do to get you back on track!

Kat, thanks a lot for your preparedness to help - much appreciated.

I followed all your instructions, with the following observations :
- CWShredder reported no infections
- Spybot reported and removed the following infections :
. DoubleClick
. Alexa Related
. DSO Exploit
- IE browser brought up popup windows as before when logging on to this (or any) site
- Browser also brought up a window saying it would have to shut down and asked if I wanted to report the problem to MS (I answered NO)

My revised HijackThis log is set out below :

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://msaps.dll/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://msaps.dll/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://msaps.dll/search.html
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [tapisys] C:\WINDOWS\System32\tss.exe

O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-511111193457} - file://c:\x.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\ied_s7.cab
C:\x.cab
C:\WINDOWS\System32\tss.exe << this FILE only, not the whole System 32 folder
After that, Reboot.

Please post a fresh HJT log in a reply so I can make sure you're good to go!

Thanks Kat,

Again followed your instructions. The following variants were applicable :
- there were 2 instances in the HijackThis scan for
O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-511111193457} - file://c:\x.cab
so I checked both
- only the file "C:\ied_s7.cab" was present, thus I deleted
- the files "C:\x.cab", and "C:\WINDOWS\System32\tss.exe" did not exist
- I did a search for the missing files but found only "tssoft32.acm', and "tsshutdn.exe", but did not delete them

After rebooting I ran Ad-aware (nothing reported), and Spybot which reported the following, but I did not take action, so as not to interfere with the process you are taking me through :

DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3

ok....those Spybot entries may be related to another line in your newest log we need to take care of!

1. Re-open HJT and scan for a new log. Place a check next to this entry only, then close ALL other windows and click FIX:

O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34545} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll

2. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

3. Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll

4. After that, reboot normally. Run another scan with Spybot, and let me know what/if it finds. Also, post a fresh HJT log for me as well!!

Followed through again. Did the HJT fix, then rebooted, found :
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll
and deleted it.

Rebooted to normal, and ran Spybot which found same or similar (red colour) DSO exploit (see below). Did a Spybot fix and ran Spybot again - still got same DSO exploit - seems Spybot can't get rid of it.

The Spybot report :

DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, nothing done)

Your log is clean now!

The DSO Exploit messages are a bug in Spybot. you can either ingore them, or download and apply the Spybot patch for it Here

Since your log is clean:

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

If you have any other problems, please let me know!

Well Kat,

I'm also purring now - thanks. You are one mean kitty !

One remaining question. I noticed the line in the HJT list which to my untrained eye looked as if it may be suspicious :
O23 - Service: WLTRYSVC - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wltrysvc.exe

presumeably this is not the case ?

Once more, thanks for your help and best wishes.

Hi again! Yes, it does look bad. So many entries actually do. When I first started doing this, I swore over half the entries had to be bad until Google became my friend, and I started really learning what everything is!
That line is, in fact, ok! Here is what it is:

ltrysvc.exe is a process belonging to the Broadcom Corporation Wireless Network Tray Applet, which interacts with your broadband hardware.

If you dont have this service, or don't need it, you can open HJT and fix that line the same way you did the others! Otherwise, leave it there!

I'm glad I could help!
