Looks like others are having some problems also, but I downloaded and installed 3 updates this morning: KB951748, KB951978, and KB890830 and then Zone Alarm began blocking all incoming and outgoing including my dsl connection to at&t. I tried to do things in ZA, but nothing worked until I did a system restore back to yesterday.

Just in case it wasn't the updates but a fluke, I installed them again and same thing happened; ZA wouldn't even let SpySweeper or AVG free check for updates. :flowers: So I did another system restore back to yesterday.

How can I figure out which one of these updates is messing up ZA? Is there a way to download and install the updates one at a time?

How do you let ZA know about this? I'd really like to do the updates.

Thanks for your help,
Jackiemarie

The culprit is update KB951748.

You can uninstall it from Add Remove Programs.

The problem appears to be limited to installations that use ZoneAlarm for a firewall. If that's you, here is an elegant solution, pending a more permanent fix from ZA.

There is reason to believe that "resetting the ZA database" via the "reset" function, the manual "reset" method, or the "Clean Re-Install" method does not resolve the issue.

ZA has a press release on the subject. The problem is the usual setting for the internet is High and the MS update broke that part, don't they always break something (like their own installers).

Thank you, tos226; great info and links. Guess I had a lapse of intellect in not being able to get the forum myself.

ZA has issued redownloads today for all versions, free and paid

Queen-Evie, thanks for the link to Bill Castner's thoughts. I wonder how it will affect people who have built strict rules to permit DNS only over the DNS port 53 now in this and other firewalls. Oh, well, we'll see. It shouldn't be too hard to change or the new versions will help in that. Just thinking out loud.

I have uninstalled file KB951748.

Does this mean I have to re-install the entire SP3 or just the above file, please, after installing the upgraded Zone Alarm? (Apologies if daft question!)

My thanks

Thank you, Tork.

I wondered whether Microsoft had a package and so I would not be able to find that particular file.

I had the same problem. I couldn't get out for a couple days, so I disabled ZA and turned on the Windows firewall, and boom, internet! I tried another firewall, and it had the same problem. Back to Windows, and found this thread.

Now that it's resolved with the new ZA, has anyone re-installed the offending Windows security file? I haven't restored it yet, perhaps I should.

orion944,

I installed the updated ZA file and a few hours later, reinstalled KB951748; that was several days, and there has not been one problem since then. Just to be sure, go to system restore and create a restore point before you install the update.

Just in passing, I read somewhere in BC that it is best to go to the Windows update site on the Start Menu>All Programs>Windows update instead of clicking on the icon in the system tray that says updates are ready.

Thanks, Jackiemarie. I thought it would probably be OK to re-install the file. I do sometimes go looking on the MS site for updates, but I usually get them from the icon in the systray. I don't automatically let them install though, until I see what they are. I will try your suggestion of using the start menu. Thanks for the post.
