Which Avast Version do you have? Have you tried checking the 'Options/Preferences' section etc. I am not sure about what is there but if you let us know maybe we can help.

I have Avast 4.8 home edition. It always updates itself to the newest version. Its great except for this problem. It does have outlook exchange monitor on it and when I shut that off the mail works fine. But I would like it to still scan my mail.
