No, I wasn't trying to use a non-IE browser to do windows updates.

No, I don't use IE on a regular basis.

Yes, I will report mean/flame posts.

Start --> windows update :
mini-IE screen comes up. I make it bigger.
Loads for a while, lots of that click thingy sound of the page changing... yes... very annoying.

Hello Lill,

You say you are using IE, what version are you using? there have been some problems with IE8 and windows update.

You could try using Dial a fix, http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System...ial-a-fix.shtml select the windows update section.
Regards,

Alan.

Well...did you try any of the offered potential solutions?

If so, which ones?

IE 6 apparently.

I don't use IE except for updates, so I wouldn't have upgraded unless it forced me. Come to think of it, I don't think it has prompted me, unless it was one of the many updates I label as trivial.

I'll download the dial-a-fix thing in a second... well, minute. :D Less than one mb!

Edit: I did all the checkboxes under windows updates, then still got the same error. Then I clicked the flush thing in that same box, hitting no so that my update log wasn't deleted, and still got the error.

Just to check if the service is started...

Start, run, services.msc look for automatic updates and background intelligent transfer are these both started?

Alan.

That is strange, could you post the last 10 or so lines from the update log?

Alan.

If I recall correctly I had that problem and the following link fixed it.

You will need to go to My Computer/Windows and then look for WindowsUpdate.log This will open in a text file the last 10-20 entries may shed some light on what has been happening.

Alan.

Failed to get session from datastore, error = 0x800700C1 basically means that the automatic updates components are damaged,

Click start then run then cmd
Type regsvr32 regwizc.dll then enter
type regsvr32 licdll.dll then enter

Restart then try automatic updates again.
Regards,

Alan.

I think the System File Checker would be the next stop...

Click start then run type sfc /scannow
This will scan for damaged windows system files and correct them.
Regards,

Alan.

It kept popping up about dll files and needing the win xp pro disk, which I don't have since it was borrowed. I have a feeling those were from my slave hdd too, which I cleaned all the system files it would let me remove.
