Difficult Infection Of Some Sort

Hi all,

My computer has some sort of infection. I'm running Windows XP home edition. The startup and login go fine, it's after the login where the problems occur. It briefly shows me my start bar and icons, but if I try and click any of them nothings happens. The desktop background is a disabled Active Desktop, because I disconnected my machine from the internet so it couldn't dial out (I'm posting this from a friend's uninfected machine). The Active desktop got set by the infection. If I manage to click on the Start Menu, none of the system-related things (My Computer, Control Panel, Run, Search, etc.) show up, and when I try to open the task manager, it says it has been disabled by the administrator. Also, the clock shows the time in military time followed by a 'Virus Alert!' warning.

After a few seconds of this, my task bar and icons disappear, and all I can see is my original desktop, and the mouse pointer. I can move the mouse around, but left-click and right-click do nothing, task manager still doesn't work, and the only way I can quit is by doing a hard reboot.

I've booted into safe mode as the administrator to take a look at things. There are similar shenanigans with the disappearing desktop, but I can actually click on most things and get them to run, and the task manager and command line both work. However, I'm not really sure what to look for. I'm not sure if I can get HijackThis to run (I'm trying to use it off a flash drive), but I can try if need be. Please give any advice you've got.

If you cannot download the following programs from the infected computer, download from another computer, save to a usb stick and transfer them to your machine.

Please print out and follow the instructions for using SDFix in BC's self-help tutorial "How to use SDFix". This program is for Windows 2000/XP ONLY.
-- When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"
-- Disconnect from the Internet and temporarily disable your anti-virus and any anti-malware real time protection before performing a scan.

When done, the SDFix report log will open in notepad and automatically be saved in the SDFix folder as Report.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of Report.txt in your next reply. Be sure to renable you anti-virus and and other security programs before connecting to the Internet.

To fix the policy restrictions created by this infection, please open the SDFix folder or download XP_CodecRepair.inf and save it to your desktop. for Windows XP ONLY.
  • Right-click on XP_CodecRepair.inf and select Install from the Context menu.
  • Note: To download the .inf file, go to File, choose "Save page as" All Files and save XP_CodecRepair.inf to your desktop.
  • Then log off or reboot to apply the changes.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Instructions with screenshots if needed.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
