Hello all,

I've got a sticky problem here. My ISP shut off my internet access due to SPAM. It appears that one of my svchost.exe processes is sending out TONS of it! I've scanned my system with Computer Associates Antivirus and Trend Micro Internet Security Pro and they say everything is fine. Windows Defender (for what it's worth) says everything is fine as well.

I have blocked port 25 at my router so that my ISP would turn my internet back on, but now I'm having some problems cleaning it up.

I started a topic here.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/156262/svchostexe-sending-spam-email/

quietman7 suggested I post my HijackThis log here.

Hello Marty Westra and welcome to BleepingComputer!

Apollogies for the delay. The forum has been very busy lately. If you are still having problems, then please post a brand new HijackThis log as a reply to this topic. Before posting the log, please make sure you follow all the steps found in this topic: Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log. Please also post the problems you are having.

When posting your log, please make sure you post the HijackThis log as a reply and not as an attachment. If we do not hear back from you within a couple of days we will need to close your topic.

Thanks,

Johannes

I am still having a svchost.exe process that is sending email out. I've got it blocked at the router, but WireShark is showing a ton of traffic coming from my machine on port 25.

Here's my latest HijackThis log.

Thanks,
Marty Westra

Hey Marty Westra,

given the severity of the situation, lets cut through the cheese and try to get rid of the main fella first. Just some pre-instruction info:

Please note that comments are made in green, links are in red, important things are outlined by using the blue color and the numbered steps I would like you to follow are outlined with orange.

Please also take note of the following:
  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Ok, now lets get started:

Step #1

Please download ComboFix from here and save it to your Desktop.

When done downloading, please print out and follow these instructions: "How to download and use ComboFix"
If you downloaded ComboFix previously, delete that version and download it again as the tool is frequently updated!
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.
  • When you have completed the ComboFix instructions, copy and paste the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
  • When done, be sure to re-enable your anti-virus and other security programs.

Do NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.

Step #2

Please post back with the ComboFix.txt first, before we start to look deeper into your system for a complete cleanup.

Thanks, YoHi

Hey Marty Westra,

Please note that you are infected with a trojan or a Backdoor / Backdoor Server.

Due to the status of some of the files you have on your computer, I strongly recommend that you do the following immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet until the computer can be cleaned.
  • From a clean computer, change your online passwords-- for email, for banks, eBay, forums etc.... (Do not change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information).
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall?

However, since the infection looks relatively small from first sight, I am happy to try and clean your PC (I am just providing you with the above information to underline the impact that can occur with files like these on your pc).

Here are two links of which a variant was found on your pc. Backdoor.Delf and Backdoor.Greybird.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case uTorrent, Emule). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organisations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

Step #1

Please copy and paste the following text into Notepad:

sc stop THUVTTGV
sc delete THUVTTGV
del services.bat

Save this as "services.bat" Choose to save as *all files and place it on your Desktop.
Double-click services.bat. Soon it should disappear from your Desktop; this is fine.

Step #2

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan (the scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient).
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Step #3

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (You need to use InternetExplorer or enable IEView in Firefox)
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Step #4

Please post back with the following logs:
  • Malware Bytes' Anti-Malware
  • Kaspersky Onlinescan
  • HijackThis
Thanks!

Thanks for the info and tips. I followed the procedures you suggested. I was able to stop and delete the THUVTTGV service in step #1. I checked using CurrPorts and it still shows email attempting to be sent out.

Here are the log files you requested.

Thanks for your help.....
Marty Westra

Hi,

Step #1
  • Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

    File::
    C:\Windows\System32\perfs.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\afinding.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\cexwxfstOLD.sys
    C:\Windows\System32\msratelc32.dll
    C:\Windows\System32\Nobicyt.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\stsycod.sys
    C:\Windows\system32\wserving.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\routing.exe
    C:\Users\mwestra\AppData\Local\Temp\JKLQKCQA.exe

    Registry::
    O16 - DPF: {E87A4CD6-BA5F-4552-BC4F-8EC240A2755C} (WebRecClient Control) - http://64.179.129.19/webrec.cab

    Driver::
    AFinding
    JKLQKCQA
    msratelc32
    Routing
    WServing
  • Save this as CFScript.txt

    Posted Image
  • Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.
    Note:
Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Step #2

Please go to Eset Onlinescan (NOD32)
(You need to use InternetExplorer or enable IEView in Firefox)
  • You will then see the Terms of Use, tick the check-box infront of YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Now click Start
  • Should you face a Security Warning that asks if you want to install and run a file called "OnlineScanner.cab", click Yes
  • Click Start (the Onlinescanner will now prepare itself for running on your pc)
  • To do a full-scan, tick: "Remove found threats" and "Scan potentially unwanted applications"
  • Press Scan
  • The Onlinescan will now start and scan your pc (this could take a while)
  • When the scan has finished, it will show a screen with two tabs "overview" and "details" and the option to get information or buy software, just close the window
  • Click Start >> Run... >> type: C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • The Scanresults will now open in Notepad
    • Click into the text area, right-click and chose "select all" (or use ctrl+a)
    • Right-click again and chose "copy" (or ctrl+c)
    • Close Notepad
  • Navigate to this thread and post your log along with anything else requested from us, by right-clicking and "paste" (or ctrl+v) in the text area of the reply post you just created.
Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.)

Step #3

Please post back with the ComboFix log and the NOD32 Onlinescan. Thanks.

Hi Marty,

can you tell me how your system is doing now?

Step #1

Please copy and paste the following text into Notepad:

sc stop NOBICYT
sc delete NOBICYT
sc stop NU
sc delete NU
del services.bat

Save this as "services.bat" Choose to save as *all files and place it on your Desktop.
Double-click services.bat. Soon it should disappear from your Desktop; this is fine.

Step #2

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Step #3

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"
Step #4

Please post back how your pc is doing now, a fresh HijackThis log and the fsbl.xxxxxxx.log log. Thanks!

Oh yeah....that's probably an important part that I missed.

Now, my computer doesn't send email out ALL the time, but I can usually catch it once or twice a day while it is happening. I've been checking it quite often and have not noticed it sending email anymore.

I think I can mark my computer as clean now.

Thank you for all your help.

Hey Marty,

I see you already used ProcessExplorer with QuietMan7. Can you do it again and snap a screenshot when it happens? Additionally, you should follow these steps please:

Having the "odd" spam mail being sent still, is not a good thing, so we will do some further investigation.

Please post back with the ComboFix.txt.

Thanks.

Thanks for your persistance...

Here's the screenshot of Process Explorer. The highlighted one was the process that was sending out the spam.
