It started with annoying pop-ups, and error messages saying my computer has several fatal errors. After which I was directed to rogue anti-virus software pages. I did a full scan with my Norton antivirus and fixed the problems listed. My computer started running slow, junk advertisements were still popping up and I could not access certain webpages. So I rebooted my computer and at start-up, an error message came up: windows failed to initialize userinit.exe properly (Oxc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application. This happened twice. After clicking ok, the desktop loads with no icons nor taskbar. Pressing ctrl-alt-del came up with another error: This feature has been disabled by the administrator. Wanted to try system restore, however, I could not go further than one day, which was when I started getting those pop-ups!

Things I have tried (in safe mode):
Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
SuperAntiSpyware
Spybot Search & Destroy (Free version)
VundoFix.exe
FixVundo (from Symantec)

After running Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, I was able to start windows in normal mode (with icons and all). But the system was very slow. So I ran it again and it was still picking up threats. I then followed the instructions found here: http://ezinearticles.com/?Remove-Vundo-and...&id=1255229
The final VundoFix scan step did not pick up any threats. So I restart my com in normal mode. Again, I got a blank screen (my desktop background was initially set to none). This time, there was the start button. but it took about 10min for it to come up. ctrl-alt-del worked. Under the processed tab, there are many applications running. When i click start --> my computer (or control panel), after quite some time, there was an error message: Windows cannot find “(null)”. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

Restart in safe mode again and ran Norton antivirus. It picked up Trojan.Vundo with the action stating: partially resolved. It also picked up W32.IRCBot and was stated as fully resolved. Tried FixVundo after that and it could not detect any Vundo Trojan in the scan. Restart in normal mode and the same thing happened ("null" error).

Here's my HijackThis log:

You are running an older version of Java. This can be a security risk so let's get you the latest version.
Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

==============

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Prior to running Combofix.exe you should disable your antivirus program and disconnect from the internet.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Prior to running Combofix.exe you should disable your antivirus program and disconnect from the internet.

Sorry, was unable to get a report from Kaspersky. Tried twice, scanned for over 10hrs per run. Whenever i click save report as, it hanged. Will try again later.

My computer is still not working as it used to. Everytime i start it, I cant see any icons on the desktop. Clicking my computer still gave me the null error. Have to use the task manager. Sometimes I can get away with it by "pretending" to shut down the machine. The desktop icons will then appear and when some of the programs hanged while ending, I can click cancel and the icons will remain. But am not able to pull off this trick all the time. And, it is running very very slowly...

Download IE7 from here and save it to your desktop.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

Click Start -> Run -> %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe
This will uninstall IE 7

Reboot your computer.
Reinstall IE7 from the file you downloaded to your desktop.

Let me know if you notice any changes.

Hello.

After downloading, uninstalling IE7 and rebooting the com, i cant re-install IE. The application hanged during the installation and I cant connect to the internet now. However, the com is able to start as normal, with icons and all...

What should I do next?

When you uninstall IE7, you're not left with any other browser?

Do you have the ability to use another computer to download something and then transfer it over?
If so, download Firefox to use as an alternate browser.

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

It sounds like the download was corrupted and you may need to download it again.

ok. I've got firefox now. Do i have to reinstall IE7 or just use firefox?
computer seems normal except that it is still running slowly. Am unable to access "my computer" too. The null error is gone (i hope). The window pops up and the icon will show that it is searching for files (with the torchlight icon). But the files/drives never come into view. Had to use the start -> run command.

edit:
lost my internet connection again. shut down the com since i wasnt using it. when i turned it on again, could nt access the net. firefox.exe appeared under the processes tab in task manager but the window did not appear. restarting the computer did not help. is there no other way to fix this mess besides reformating? T.T

Firefox is an excellent browser and you should be able to use it 99% of the time. But you will need to reinstall IE.
Go back to this page and download the installation file again.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

Open task manager and kill any unnecessary tasks before you begin installing IE.
Let me know what happens if you have problems during installation.

still cant install. it will hang. I think there may be some programs that are hindering it. While shutting down, the firefox window opened. So i cancel the shut down and could access the net. However, when i tried the installation again the message was, the previous installation is incomplete. So I had to shut down the com. After restart, I could nt access the net nor complete the installation.
Im a computer noob. Dun really know which tasks are considered unnecessary except those really obvious ones like BTTray, iTunesHelper etc.

Kill all tasks that Windows will allow you to kill except explorer.exe

Do you have your Windows CD?
