No matter what I click on, be it an email, IE, a program, EVERYTHING, some stupid window pops up that says Windows Installer...and it says 'installing'. It sits there for a few minutes, then goes away. I have no idea WHAT it is trying to install or WHY it is doing this, but it takes me about 20 minutes to read about 5 emails at this rate.

Suggestions please. I did do a system restore for about a week ago. Same thing. Oh, and now the picture that I had on my desktop is gone.

I did run a McAfee scan...came up clean.

Thanks so much

Thanks. I did the Panda....it found 83 incidents of spy/malware. I bought a membership. Installed Panda. It removed the spy/malware. Guess what? Windows Installer STILL is popping up. So, 40 bucks poorer, the problem persists. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Here is the answer:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Good luck!

EDIT:

Now that I have a couple of minutes, I thought I would give some better instructions.

On the page that I linked to earlier there is a download. It is an uninstaller tool. Download it to your computer, and then double click on the downloaded file to install the program on your computer. Then, by going to Start>All Programs you will see it has been added to your list of programs. Click on it to start. When it starts you will see a list of programs on your computer such as the following image:

Click on the offending program, and then click on Remove and your problems are gone.

Of course, before taking this action you will need to know which program is the offender. Look for clues when the installer dialog box opens on your computer next time. It should say which program is trying to install something.

Possible for you to take a screen shot of the window that pops up? It would definitely help everyone here to help you.

Just so there's no misunderstanding
Do not use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility with Microsoft Office
It says so on the download page

Not sure. Perhaps you must let it run longer, because at some point it should tell you what it is trying to install. Usually it will say something like "Please insert CD labeled "The Program" and click continue" or something like that.
