farbar,

Thank you for the reply! Since I posted originally I found something else on my computer that may have been causing the problems. I had MSHTML3.exe in the local settings temp file. AVG found it on it's 7th full computer scan and removed it... I hope.

I do not know if this was the problem or not. I look forward to your findings based on HijackThis.

Thank you again.

Hello again,

  • I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
    1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
    2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either AVG8 or Norton.

  • Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

    http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now.

Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

  • Please open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below (if present):

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
    O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://www.popcap.com/games/popcaploader_v6.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

    • Close all applications and windows.
    • Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
    • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not
      malicious.

      • main.txt <- this one will be maximized
      • extra.txt <- this one will be minimized
    • If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder.
    • Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
-- When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that it is trying to access the Internet especially if your asked to download the most current version of HijackThis. Please ensure that you allow it permission to do so.
-- If you get a warning from your anti-virus while DSS is scanning, please allow DSS to continue as the scan is not harmful.

  • Please copy and paste to your reply:
    • The MBAM log.
    • The DSS logs.

Hi Wanda Wonder,

Good job. Your log looks clean now. Just a few things:

:)
  • Using windows explorer remove the following folder: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

    • Click Start and then Run to bring up the Run box.
    • Copy and paste the contents of this quote box into the run box:

      "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

    • Click OK.
    • Click OK to the prompt from Deckard's System Scanner.
    • Click Scan.
    • Place a tick next to the following entries (if they are present).
      .reg
      .scr
    • Click Fix
    • Please run dss.exe once more and copy and paste the content of its log into your reply.
  • Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
    • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Select your Platform: "Windows".
    • Select your Language: "English".
    • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

  • Since you have removed Norton you have no firewall on your computer any more. Without it your computer is still very much susceptible to reinfection. I strongly advise you to install a firewall before surfing. You find more information on this below.

  • Windows XP Service Pack 2 is now outdated. Microsoft has recently released Service Pack 3 which has more features and is more secure than Service Pack 2. You may update your Windows via Windows update.

In order to reduce the possible infection in the future, you may follow the following steps:
  • First Set a New Restore Point then Remove the Old Restore Points to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

To set a new restore point:
    • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
    • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
    • Give the Restore Point a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
To remove the old restore points:
    • Go to Start > Run then type: Cleanmgr in the box and click "OK".
    • Click the "More Options" Tab.
    • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
  • Sometimes the Privacy, Security and Web settings are altered by the malware. Check and if needed reset them to default:
    • Open Internet explorer > Tools menu > Internet options.
    • Under privacy tab press default.
    • Under security tab press default.
    • Under Programs tab press Reset Web Settings and click OK.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software definitions and run the program on a regular basis.

  • Use a firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
Click for more information on:Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Make sure you install all the security updates for Windows, Internet explorer & Microsoft Office.
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it to that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC, so keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC.
Go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications.

  • Install Javacoolsİ SpywareBlaster -
SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. You can find more information and a download link here.

  • Besides your Antivirus make use of Antispyware programs. I recommend the following antispyware programs to protect yourself against spyware, make sure you only use one real-time antispyware protection program besides your antivirus teal-time protection as running more than one real-time antispyware program may cause compatibility problems and effect the performance of your system negatively:
    SUPERAntiSpyware
    Spybot - Search and Destroy
    Ad-Aware 2007 Free
