I believe my computer is infected with the winfixer virus. Can you please help? I love this forum because I know the best techs are onboard and are very helpful! Okay here is the situation.

This virus came grouped with a download from sumotorrent. It took over my desktop displaying a statement that my computer was infected and to purchase antivirus 2008. Also when trying to acces the web it says google won't let me in because my computer is infected, WTF! Here is what I have done thus far.

Ran Malware bytes and removed 17 infected files. This removed the desktop warning, however the google dsclaimer is still on my computer.

Ran VundoFix 7.0 and no infections were found.

My computer is still not functioning properly. I ran hijack this and the log is as follows:

Hello supershady, and welcome to BC.

My apologies for the delay. We're all volunteers, and we've been swamped.

We'll begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Hi,

Things are looking better.

Please use the Internet Explorer browser, and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.
**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Post that log in addition to a fresh HijackThis log. Be sure to let me know how things are running now. :)

Hi,

Please delete the contents of this folder (leaving it empty):
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator 1\.housecall6.6\Quarantine

Also delete this file:
F:\My Movie Library\Amateur Annette Schwarz.avi

Next, navigate to Start --> Run, and type Combofix /u in the box that appears. Click OK afterwards. Notice the space between the X and the /u

This uninstalls all of ComboFix's components.

Finally, please download OTMoveIt
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know what problems remain.

Everything seems to be coming together with restoring my system, but I am no expert. I no longer have the "google won't let you in pop up", or the avast "virus warning" after system startup. I deleted to files you recommended as well. It is hard to let go of Annette Schwarz, but it is all for the better! Here is my latest Hijackthis log file:

Hi,

Good work. Your log appears to be clean!

Now that your computer seems to be in proper working order, please take the following steps to help prevent reinfection:

1) It is vital that you have a firewall. The one that comes with Windows XP is not sufficient in that it only checks incoming data. I recommend selecting one of the following free firewalls. Be sure to only install one.

Comodo
Kerio
Outpost

2) Download and install Spybot-Search & Destroy, which has great features (specifically Immunization and TeaTimer) that help prevent malware from getting on your computer. Also a great scanner for weekly checks of the health of your system.

3) Download and install Javacool's SpywareBlaster, which will prevent malware from being installed on your computer. A tutorial on it can be found here.

4) Download and install IE-Spyad, which will place over 5000 'bad' sites on your Internet Explorer Restricted List. A tutorial on it can be found here.

5) Go to Windows Update frequently to get all of the latest updates (security or otherwise) for Windows.

6) Be sure to update your Antivirus and Antispyware programs often!

Finally, please also take the time to read Tony Klein's excellent article on: So How Did I Get Infected in the First Place?

Safe surfing,

Thanks very much screen317. I appreciate you help. My wife has not approved of me donating via pay pal because she gets all freaked out over it. However, if you have a P.O. Box, we would prefer that method for a donation. Thanks again, my system seems to have been restored. Well except, I installed Kerio Winroute and now I can't unistall it!

Well except, I installed Kerio Winroute and now I can't unistall it!

I recommend posting in Kerio's support forum; they should be able to help you out, but any reason why you want to uninstall Winroute?

Thanks very much screen317. I appreciate you help. My wife has not approved of me donating via pay pal because she gets all freaked out over it. However, if you have a P.O. Box, we would prefer that method for a donation.

For security reasons I cannot give out that information.. unfortunately the only method accepted is Paypal. I (and many other esteemed individuals) can assure you it's safe, but if your wife insists on not doing it, it's not that big of a deal.

Anything else I can help with?
