I am trying to help a friend who is having PC issues with her Dell. I checked it and noticed it was getting many popups. I assumed this was spyware. It doesn't have virus protection, major no-no, and the hard drive is spinning very fast without anything running in the task manager with the CPU running at around 3%. I never heard a hard drive run so fast at a constant rate. Weird.

I decided to download the free version of AVG anti-virus protection on it to hopefully clean up the mess. Since then I haven't been able to open Internet Explorer or any other major programs. I couldn't even go to add or remove programs. They attempt to open and nothing appears.

My other PC's are protected and I never experienced this before. Could this be a virus? If so, since I can't download anything to it, how do I clean this mess up?
