I'd like to help, chrisl.
If I faced a similar situation I'd want to know more before I began to deal with it.

Mainly because I would be considering re-format/re-partitioning and reloading the OS.

Having faced a similar dilema myself, it doesn't necessarily mean I could advise you
in exactly what to do, without knowing what I generally do about my own.

Best thing would be to provide a list of what you have to work with:
PC type is IBM, but what model & specifications?
WindowsXP pro = OS, but is it pre-loaded or do you have a CD?
Do you have any boot disks?

Can you access your BIOS?

Try power on (several times) and note any sounds made.
Note any consistant performance factors, for example:
the time it takes to get to the black screen in seconds
anything other than just a plain black screen?
any thing else?

Details help.
