So...I let my 17 year old daughter use my laptop for the week...I got it back and it was running so slowly that it was not functional. So, I decided to use my Desktop to figure out what the issue was...only to find out my desktop was infected as well!

I figured I'd try to get the Desktop up & running infection free and then work on the laptop in a seperate post...so here goes desktop info...

I ran the Kaspersky scan and it only came up with an infected file from my Norton Quarantine folder...SpyBot S&D came up with several adware and 5 entries of the Virtumonde virus. Several randomly named dll files and registry entries...SpyBot freezes up during the "Fix Selected Issues" phase. If needed I could run it again and post exactly the files it found.

**Edit: Here's the SpyBot S&D Report:

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.

Prior to running Combofix.exe you should disable your antivirus program and disconnect from the internet.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Going forward it's much easier for me to review the logs if you copy and paste the text directly into your reply instead of attaching it.

Copy and paste ALL the following text in the Quote box below into Notepad.
Click on File(in the menu at the top)>Save as../Save as Type: 'All Files' /File name: CFScript to your desktop.

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\etxjcr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\adxgsnof.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kedlclgr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\uklkfaqj.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\uqsppd.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jvdtyliy.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cqvunfht.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ysnpfo.dll

Prior to running Combofix.exe you should disable your antivirus program and disconnect from the internet.

Now drag then drop the CFScript file onto ComboFix.exe as seen in the image below.

This will start ComboFix again.
After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Ready for round 2?

Copy and paste ALL the following text in the Quote box below into Notepad.
Click on File(in the menu at the top)>Save as../Save as Type: 'All Files' /File name: CFScript to your desktop.

===============

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Looking pretty good. Please post a new log from DSS.
How is your computer behaving now?
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

-- End of Deckard's System Scanner: finished at 2008-07-01 21:16:26 ------------

It's running very smoothly. Quick and no pop ups. I had one pop up earlier, prior to the last ComboFix session, but nothing since (knock on wood). There are a couple of annoyances that have been there for quite some time though...maybe since we are at it you could tell me how to stop them from appearing? If I need a seperate post in a different forum i understand...

I keep getting a realplayer installation message...saying my computer must be connected to the internet to install real player...for one I don't want real player installed, and two, I am connected to the internet!. I uninstalled RealPlayer a while ago, but the messages keep appearing.

Also, since I have had this compuer, I get a message telling me Microsoft Outlook is not the default mail client...I don't use Outlook, but it appears every time I reboot.

Like I said if I need to post those small issues elsewhere I understand...I just thought maybe you saw something in the logs that could make those go away.

Thank you,
Glenn

For this next step you will need to disable Spybot's Teatimer or it will interfere with Hijackthis.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
===================

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Next, delete this folder.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.
That should take care of your Realplayer problem.

==================

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Internet Options
Select the Programs tab and make sure you have your preferred email client selected.

Next open up Outlook.
Click Tools -> Options
Select the "Other" tab.
Uncheck "Make Outlook the default program for Email, Contacts, and Calendar".

Let me know if that resolves the issue.

The Real Player issue is resolved (thank you!), but under tools>options>other there is only a general section which has "empty deleted items foldrer upon exiting", an auto-archive section and a preview pane section. It's Outlook 2000 if that makes a difference.

Thanks,
Glenn

I'm not sure that you can make that adjustment with Outlook 2000. It may all be controlled through the other Internet settings. Were you able to make the changes there?

One other thing we can try. Fix this line with Hijackthis.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Reboot and see if you still get that message.

That seemed to do it! No more Real Player and no more Outlook message! The Internet Options was pointing to the correct mail client.

Thank you very much Sam!

Going forward, what do you recommend for protection. My Norton Internet Security 2005 is out of subscription...before I upgrade or renew I would like to make sure there isn't a better option.

I guess I should make sure there is nothing else you need me to check/run though before I go any further...

Thanks,
Glenn

Your log was looking pretty good a couple posts back, so as long as you're not having issues I think you should be good.

As far as an antivirus, I tend to recommend the ones that I don't a lot on this board. That seems to indicate that they're doing the job. Check out Sophos, Kaspersky, or Nod32. I can also recommend AVG if you're looking for a free version. I am not a big fan of Norton and I can't recommend it.

Just a few last things and you should be good to go! :)

First, your log shows that you don't have the recovery console installed.
Check this link for more info on the recovery console and how to get it installed.

How to install and use the Windows XP Recovery Console

===================

Next, let's remove Combofix now that we're done with it and clean up a few other things.
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

    • Posted Image
  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

==================

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

 :)

Thanks Sam! Your help was amazing! Thank you very much. I had a couple of questions...see below.

First, your log shows that you don't have the recovery console installed.
I'm not sure why it was showing up that way, it's not showing up as installed on my laptop either. I can access it by going to Start>Programs>System Tools>System Restore. So I guess as long as it's there i'm ok right?

[*]Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
I've narrowed it down to either AVG Internet Security or Kaspersky Internet Security...with either on I can get it for at least 2 users (my laptop and desktop) Any thoughts?

[*]Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
I have automatic updates enabled...should I still make it a habit to visit the site?

[*]Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
I have it, that's how I found what viruses I had...the Resident was filling up the screen with .dll's that were trying to register! Thanks for the link on the tutorial, I'll check it out.

[*]Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
I have that as well...I guess I just need to get on a routine of running them...I'll set Ad-aware to scan on a schedule...too bad SpyBot doesn't allow that.

[*]Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
Haven't heard of that one...thank you!

[*]Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
[/list]Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
I guess I should pick a day to be my updating and scanning day! It would definately save me a lot of time and headaches...

 :)

Thank you very much! Like I said before you've been extremely helpful. Thank you for your patience and expertise! :)
