Hello julietnovember1,

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy and Paste the entire Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware report in your next reply along with a fresh DSS Main log. Please dont post your logs in colors, as that makes it hard to read.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi julietnovember1,

We will run ComboFix.

You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, ]not for private use.

Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

You need to disable your Symantec/Norton Antivirus before running ComboFix, as it will prevent it from running.

To disable Norton Antivirus:
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a Posted Image sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Disable Auto-Protect."
  • select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
  • click "Ok."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled and the sign will now look like this: Posted Image
You succesfully disabled the Norton Antivirus Guard.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

To work properly, you must install ComboFix on the Desktop.

When following the instructions install the Windows XP Recovery Console if you are using XP. <== IMPORTANT
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time. It is our safety net.

You DO NOT need to have the Windows CD to install Recovery Console!

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

We need Recovery Console because malware damages a lot and causes an instable system - and because of that, it may happen that your computer won't be able to boot anymore. With the Recovery Console installed, there are extra options present to repair whatever malware damaged.
Also, even though you're not infected, the presence of the Recovery Console is a useful feature in case a computer won't boot anymore because of several other reasons. Read  here   what you can do with the Recovery Console.

Extra note: After you have installed the Recovery Console - if you reboot your computer, right after reboot, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well.
Don't select to run the Recovery Console as we don't need it.
By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows.

A caution -
Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.
Do not run Combofix more than once.
Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

Post the ComboFix log.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi julietnovember1,

Is this a business or work computer?

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Start, then Run and type Notepad and click OK.
Open notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the code box below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xqewwces.exe

Folder::
C:\VundoFix Backups

Name the Notepad file CFScript.txt and Save it to your desktop.

IMPORTANT: The above script was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Hi Mike,

This is a business computer, however I'm the most adept with computers in my office (small business, only 4 of us here) and the only one able to follow these sorts of instructions. I really appreciate your help.

Hi julietnovember1,

Does your company have an IT department? If so, this would be a job for them and that is what they are paid to do.

We're volunteers that work for free here, on a donation only basis. Your company may also have policies in place for this kind of thing, and I won't be responsible for possibly going against policy.
Most IT depts will reformat and reinstall

Please let me know what you're going to do.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

No we don't, this is a family business and my Father is the boss. We are far from a corporate office, I couldn't hold anybody reading HJT and combofix logs responsible when that person isn't even physically sitting down in front of the machine.

Since we've started the computer is behaving much better now, I haven't had anymore crazy pop-ups. Lets keep moving!

Hi julietnovember1,

OK, onward.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 6".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6u6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Reboot your computer.

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan

Note that you need to run this scan with Internet Explorer for it to work correctly.

If you have any problem running the scan to completion, disable your Antivirus and/or firewall temporarily, just refrain from surfing around while the scan is running and be sure to re-enable when done.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

1. Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
2. A dialogue box will appear asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat step 1.
3. Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows Kaspersky to run.
4. If running MSAS beta you may receive an alert that an IE ActiveX program requires your approval. Click "Allow"
5. Wait for the scanner to initialize and update its databases. When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
6. Click "Scan Settings" and check the option to use the EXTENDED DATABASE,
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

then click "OK"
7. Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer" and the scan will begin.
8. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save Report As... button:

Posted Image

Under Save as type select Text file write name for the file and save it to your Desktop.
Locate the file at the Desktop, open it, then copy and paste that information in your next post.
9. Post the Kaspersky scan results and a Hijackthis log in your next reply.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

The Kaspersky scan is taking much longer than I anticipated. I'll have to leave it running over night and post the log tomorrow morning...

Also, what is the average donation amount you receive for this kind of help???

It all depends on the person. Some kids give nothing, but that is OK as I recognize they dont have a job (no income, no paypal, no credit card).
Others give $25 to $50, all depends on the infection on their computer.
One CFO was kind enough to donate several hundred dollars.

Just give what you can afford, and think of the amount you would have to pay (and time you would lose) if you took it to a computer shop for malware removal.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi julietnovember1,

Everything Kaspersky found was files previously quarentined by ComboFix. :)

I think we have you clean. Good job on the cleanup!

Uninstall ComboFix, go to to Start > Run & type in ComboFix /u
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete any of its related folders and files (Qoobox
VundoFix Backups, Avenger, Deckard, _OTMoveIt), reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Please read and follow How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!

Awesome, great job! I am really thankful. In the beginning I could barely run my machine without being in safe mode. Now its working properly.

Tell me what you spend on average to fill up your car with a full tank of gas and I'll make a donation. Does that sound fair?
