So somehow I've managed to allow some kind of spyware/malware through my computer's defense. I keep getting popups that read "Windows Security System has detected spyware infection! Spyware may compromise your privacy...." I was also getting popups that said something about Vista Antivirus so I ran an avast scan and Norton scan and removed a couple of files and now the Vista Antivirus popups are just a white window with no pics/text. However, I still receive the Windows Security System popups. Here is the scan results. Thanks!

Hey fenzodahl512. I just did a system restore to the day before i started having problems (June 25) and everything seems to be running ok. Would it still be best if I posted another DSS log just to make sure the threat is gone?

I completed the first step successfully and I completed the Kaspersky online scanner but when i try to save the results in a text file I cannot get it to show up on my desktop or as a file to open under my documents or anything. My computer is running fine but kaspersky did find some infections. Do you have any suggestions?

Yup... Lets run F-Secure online scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
  • Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
  • Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
  • If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
  • When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
  • Click Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
Notes:
  • This scan will only work with Internet Explorer
  • You must have administrator rights to run this scan
  • This scan can take several hours, so please be patient

Then please also post me a fresh DSS log for my final review before I can set you free..

Your log looks clean to my eyes.. However, I noticed that you have two antivirus in your computer (Norton Internet Security, Avast).. This is not a good idea as it may conflict with each other and reduce your protection potential greatly...

Please uninstall ONLY ONE of them now.. Leave either one of them in your computer...

If you decide to uninstall Avast! Antivirus, please do so via Add or Remove Programs section in Control Panel

Should you decide to remove Norton Internet Security 2007, please do the following..

Please download the Norton Removal Tool from HERE and Save it to your Desktop
  • Close all programs and double click the Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
  • Follow the on-screen instructions
  • Restart the computer if asked
  • Then delete Norton_Removal_Tool.exe from your desktop

After that please post a fresh DSS log for my final review..

Regards

Hey fenzodahl512,

I didn't realize running two antivirus programs could do that so thanks for letting me know. I removed norton because my subscription expired several months ago and I have yet to renew. Here is the final DSS log (hopefully). Thanks a lot for all of your time and help.

Great! Your log looks clean to my eyes....

Now for some cleanup..
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please Install/Update Sun Java

  • Select it and click Remove. This will uninstall the previous (outdated) version of Java.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6

Let's clean your Restore Points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous Restore Points which are likely to be infected)
To create a new Restore Point.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK. This will flush your old System Restore.
  • Then please UNCHECK the Turn off System Restore.
  • Click again on Apply, and then click OK. This will create a new Restore Point
System Restore will now be active again

If you are using Windows Vista, please go HERE for tutorial on how to use, disable and enable System Restore

I noticed you already have..

1. Avast Antivirus as your antivirus
2. Malwarebytes' as your antispyware..

However, I haven't seen any third-party firewall in your logs.. Do you have any? If you don't, please install ONLY ONE of these free and excellent firewal below:
  • Comodo Firewall Pro
  • PC Tools Firewall Plus
After you install the third party firewall, please disable your Windows firewall. Please go to My Computer >> Control Panel >> Windows Firewall and choose Off (not recommended) option. Then please click Apply and Ok.

Lastly, to keep your operating system up to date please visit the link below monthly
    [list]
  • Microsoft Windows Update
