Hello all,

I recently purchased a brand new Dell desktop with Windows Vista Home Premium. Within a few days of customizing/using it, I have a few annoying pop-ups that show up whenever I browse the Internet using IE 7. Pop-ups that show up include registrydefender.com, forex.com, and mevio.com - one time there were pop-ups by symantec.com too. I ran scans using Ad-Aware and McAfee Security, and also used Combofix and Vundofix (since i heard that vundo/virtumonde were one of the most common types of spyware/malware that causes this problem), but none of this seems to work.

Combofix worked at one point, but then after installing SP1 for Vista, the pop-ups appeared again. Could someone please take a look and see if i missed something? Could SP1 opened up my computer to more attacks? Here is my HiJackThis log:

Title was: Trojan.win32.inject.abx And Cid Popups - Slows Down Ie, Have tried everything, cannot remove infection ~ OB

Hello,

This problem/infection has been present for a VERY long time and I've tried practically everything to remove/fix it. Every time I use IE, CiD popup windows appear which severely slow down and crash my browser. Antivirus scans have not been able to remove it. Against my better judgment I've even tried to use programs like Vundofix. I sincerely hope someone can help me because this is very annoying and I curse myself for not giving up sooner and coming for help to more experienced people such as the moderators/tech support people of this forum. Here is my DSS log and my Kaspersky log, shown below:

Hi, welcome back

1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.

Remove the following programs, if they are present.
  • Java™ 6 Update 3
  • Java™ 6 Update 5
  • If you now use the Trend Micro OfficeScan Antivirus v8.0 and dont use anymore your Norton Internet Security v2007, please remove:
  • Norton Internet Security
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:
How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer

2) Now, click Start and then Run to bring up the Run box.
  • Copy and paste the contents of this quote box into the run box:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

  • Click OK.
  • Click OK to the prompt from Deckard's System Scanner.
  • Click Scan.
  • Place a tick next to the following entries (if they are present).
    • .cpl - cplfile - shell\cplopen\command - rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "%1",%*
      .reg - regfile - shell\open\command - regedit.exe "%1" %*
      .scr - scrfile - shell\open\command - "%1" %*
  • Click Fix

3) Jotti File Submission:
  • Please go to Jotti's malware scan
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan"box on the top of the page:
    • C:\Program Files\atsu\tbatsu.dll
  • Click on the submit button
  • Please post the results in your next reply.
  • Repeat for these:
    • C:\ProgramData\Meta Okay Free.cwpgouh
      C:\ProgramData\Start Dale Dale.9wi5aa
  • If Jotti's too busy, try on VirusTotal

4) Please download the ComboFix from the links above and follow all instructions for running the tool:
"If you downloaded ComboFix previously, delete that version and download it again as the tool is frequently updated!"

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
  • Be sure to re-enable your anti-virus and other security programs, after ComboFix finished.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall.

Extra-Note: Please, DO NOT use ComboFix on your own. It is a very powerful tool designed to deal with sophisticated infections and if something goes wrong or you use it incorrectly, you could possibly lose the use of your computer. It is ONLY meant to be used under the direct supervision of a malware removal specialist. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer

5) In your next reply, please post the results from Jotti, Combofix and a new HijackThis log.

Regards
