I have been infected with Antivirus XP 2008. It has left me with a permanent blue background and a "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer!" message on my desktop. Restore points prior to the infection have been removed, but I cannot change my desktop. Removal of the program via the control panel is not allowed. I have tried several things suggested to me in another forum, but none have worked. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I did not run the Kaspersky scan because I have limited time to work on this right now. I did do the DSS scan and the logs are posted below. :thumbsup:

Here is the main report:

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Prior to running Combofix.exe you should disable your antivirus program and disconnect from the internet.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Copy and paste ALL the following text in the Quote box below into Notepad.
Click on File(in the menu at the top)>Save as../Save as Type: 'All Files' /File name: CFScript to your desktop.

Folder::
C:\Program Files\rhc74oj0ej3g
C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas Barnhart\Application Data\rhc74oj0ej3g

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\phc34oj0ej3g.bmp

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"lphc34oj0ej3g"=-
"sysrest32.exe"=-
Prior to running Combofix.exe you should disable your antivirus program and disconnect from the internet.

Now drag then drop the CFScript file onto ComboFix.exe as seen in the image below.

This will start ComboFix again.
After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Let me know how your computer is behaving now.

:thumbsup:

Buckeye Sam - You da man! O - H - ? - ?

Many, many thanks.

The blue screen and the virus warning is gone. I was able to get my old desktop themes etc. again,: i.e., the control panel is now accessible. However, it did take quite a while for the computer to re-boot.

I will post the log below, but first I have a few more questions for you.

This "rhc74oj0ej3g" I was able to identify as the culprit a couple days ago (I have been infected since Sat. nite June 21) but was unable to do anything about it.
I have Spybot on my computer and it warns me of changes in the registry. As a general rule I do not allow them, but this time it popped up and said that rhc74oj0ej3g was removed, so I allowed it. It also mentioned two other things that I did not allow.
Can you give me any advice on what to allow and what not to allow?

Assuming my computer was compromised in terms of security, can I assume it is now safe to use again for banking, etc.? I have already changed banking passwords on another computer.

I have Trend Micro PC-Cillin, that came with my computer (Dell Inspiron with Windows XP), but I also purchased Norton 360 since my attack, and I also have it running. Should I keep both of these on my machine?

I also have Spybot Search and Destroy as well as Webroot's Spy Sweeper; Should I keep both of these running?

Also, can you tell me anything about the RECOVERY CONSOLE that my machine does not have?

And finally, the following programs were downloaded and run during the course of this tribulation: SDFix, ComboFix, OTMoveIt2, HijackThis, DSS, and Mbam. Should I keep all these in case they are needed in the future?

Again, many thanks, from a Boilermaker to (I assume) a Buckeye, Buckeye Sam, Sam-I-Am, Sam the Man!

Please advise if I need to do more.

:)

Buckeye Sam - You da man! O - H - ? - ?

I - O
I do in fact, bleed scarlet and gray. :thumbsup:

I have Spybot on my computer and it warns me of changes in the registry. As a general rule I do not allow them, but this time it popped up and said that rhc74oj0ej3g was removed, so I allowed it. It also mentioned two other things that I did not allow.
Can you give me any advice on what to allow and what not to allow?

Just use common sense here. Registry changes will happen when you install a new program, uninstall a program, or clean up malware like we are doing. As long as you recognize that and know what's going on you can usually accept these changes. It's when you get a change that happens suddenly and unexpected that you should be suspicious.

Assuming my computer was compromised in terms of security, can I assume it is now safe to use again for banking, etc.? I have already changed banking passwords on another computer.

I don't see anything in your latest log that would indicate that it's unsafe. Just use common sense and take normal precautions.

I have Trend Micro PC-Cillin, that came with my computer (Dell Inspiron with Windows XP), but I also purchased Norton 360 since my attack, and I also have it running. Should I keep both of these on my machine?

No, you need to uninstall one of them. Antivirus programs can conflict with each other and cause a lot problems if you run more than one.

I also have Spybot Search and Destroy as well as Webroot's Spy Sweeper; Should I keep both of these running?

The key here is to layer in your protection, but only using one program for real time protection. The other one can just be run manually as needed.

We'll cover these in the final steps I have for you now.

You can uninstall Mbam, but the others can easily be cleaned up by following this process.
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Check this link for more info on the recovery console and how to get it installed.

How to install and use the Windows XP Recovery Console

==================

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

    You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

    Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

    See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

    Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

    For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Once again, many, many thanks, Sam. I am almost where I need to be, but still have just a couple more queries.

I have a very long boot-up time. It takes about 2 minutes or more after my desktop background appears until the icons appear. I think it has to do with PC-Cillin trying to start up. Apparently it is still on there, but not on there, if you know what I mean. When I go to the program listings and try to select "uninstall PC-cillin" the icon associated with it has a little red "x" on it, as if it is not there. Same thing with the icon when I go to the control panel and try to uninstall it that way. I know there are remnants of it on the computer because the icon in the system tray is still there and whenever I roll my mouse over it, it says it is loading, but it never does load. Also I am getting error messages about "Tmpfw" and "__CLS_PCCGuide". I am pretty sure that both are remnants of PC-Cillin. Is this simply a matter of finding them and deleting those files?

I can help you clean that up, but I need you to clarify exactly what you are using. I see signs of Norton in your log. Are you using it?
And I see Trendmicro running it's firewall also. I just need to know what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. Then we'll proceed from there.

Sam - I followed your latest directions but then was unable to connect to the internet. I called tech support at my ISP and it turned out we had to re-set some settings for the connection. All seems well after doing that, but I decided to wait a few days to reply just to make sure things were OK. That appears to be the case at this time. I know now where to come when in trouble. Again, many thanks. thb :thumbsup:
