my problem is that the built in speakers in my vs17 do not work at all
its not too big of a problem but it makes everything sound alot better since i have two external altec lansing speakers + sub woofer.
ive heard about making sure the sound cord is plugged in but i dont know about the sound cord. i only have two cords on my monior , one with blue ends and two screws that goes to my tower and the second cord is just straight grey and it plugs into my power bar. i dont remember having a sound cord i just remember the two and ive had sound come out of it before and ive had the computer for two years.

any and all help is greatly appreciated

one with blue ends and two screws that goes to my tower

That's your video cable

second cord is just straight grey and it plugs into my power bar

That's your power cable

i dont remember having a sound cord i just remember the two and ive had sound come out of it before and ive had the computer for two years.

That is highly unlikely (in fact, I'm almost 100% sure that there must have been another cable at the back).

Do this:
Take a look at the back of the monitor, and let me know how many ports there are for cables. One will have your video cable, one for your power, and I'm almost certain you'll find one for the sound cable.

well there are definetly 3 ports on the back

and the sound cord isnt there and ive looked all around and havent found anything that would resemble it. and the green speaker port in the bakc to the computer is currently being taken by my speaker system

That drawing was fantastic

This sign:
((.)) is an audio port symbol.

You could have an arrow, pointing towards it (Audio in) and point out (audio out).

In your case, that port is an audio in port. What you'll need to do is to plug a cable from the audio OUT port of your PC to this port in the monitor.

What you're looking for is a stereo cable with a jack at both ends:

They're roughly $5-ish

Make sure you get a double STEREO cable, not MONO.

How do you tell the difference? There are two black (or whatever colour) stripes on the metallic part of the jack in a stereo cable and only one stripe on the mono.

They're quite common. I use the very same thing for my computer, and I also have one to hook my iPod Touch up to my car's auxilliary cable port

Few explanations:
*Maybe you were using other speakers and didn't notice?
*You lost the cord?
