I am a novice when it comes to computers but I've had this searchmeup.com come up as my home page and I cannot get rid of it. Through some reading on the forum here I've found out it is a adware or virus of some sort. I looked at the Hijackthis and below is my log. Can someone advise me on how to get rid of this and how to go about preventing it?

Hello Robrooklyn and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Important
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. If it is run from Temporary folders the backups and HijackThis itself could be accidentally deleted if the Temporary folders are cleaned. If it running from the desktop the backup files/folders could be accidentally removed.* Please open My Computer
* Double-click on Local Disk (C:)
* Click on the File menu, point to New and then click on Folder. Name the folder 'HijackThis' or 'HJT'.
* Unzip to or copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.
Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://topsearch4u.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://topsearch4u.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://topsearch4u.com/sp.htm
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://daosearch.com/index.php?id=585&said=nicket_m
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://topsearch4u.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,SearchURL = http://topsearch4u.com/sp.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Service Host] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Services\{A192FB6F-4300-4D32-80B6-8CAF6F8DBD55}\SVCHOST.EXE
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #3

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Services\{A192FB6F-4300-4D32-80B6-8CAF6F8DBD55}\ <--folder
Step #4

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

I've deleted them and it looks like the system is back to normal except that it seems a bit slow. Below is my new log and I've also moved it to its own folder on the c:drive. Thank you for all of your assistance and if I may i notice this on my log should this be a concern?

Hi again Robrooklyn. Looking better. You don't have to worry about any of the items with an 016 that you currently have. The one that you menttion looks like it came from Yahoo Games. If you go there and play different games, each one will download its own activex control so you can play the game. You can delete it if you want to and if you go back to play the game later on it will simply download and reinstall. Many internet cleanup utilities do this automatically.

It appears we have another item here so let's take care of that.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dhlpxod] c:\windows\cvjtafp.exe
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Find the following file and delete it (don't worry if it is already gone):c:\windows\cvjtafp.exe
OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.

I see that you have posted this same log twice in this forum and are receiving help on the other posting also. Please do not post the same log more than once. It creates uneeded work for the volunteers on this site who could be helping others.

This topic will be closed. Please continue with your other post to finish your fix.
