it's free and i think its meant more to keep peoples' anonominity while partaking in the more illegal side of the internet. But i was wondering if it could help keep a computer more secure from hackers and the like?

its meant more to keep peoples' anonominity while partaking in the more illegal side of the internet

It's that and for the paranoid among us who believe the government is watching us when we open the refrigerator and the little light comes on
Some sites will detect proxy severs and block access
