Hi,

It looks like I might have another Virtumonde outbreak. The owner of this system doesn't really use the spyware removal tools on it, so there hasn't been much prevention going on.

Anyway, the system's apparently seemed a lot slower recently, and Eset turned up a Virtumonde.dll, which was deleted. I can't imagine the virus being stupid enough to telegraph itself like that, but I get the feeling there's probably another infection.

Can someone take a look? Thanks.

Hello Cunnysmythe,

Welcome to BC!

Sorry for the delay.

If you are still out there and needing help, I would like you to do a few things for me:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe or http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Next, Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

My laptop didn't come with an XP CD, and I can't find another way to install the recovery console. I used the installation folder files, and that gave an error message about the recovery console being newer than the version of Windows. When I looked for help about that, it was recommended that I... use my XP CD or install the recovery console.

Is there a way around it?

When you say:

A great person sent me a nice direction set on installing Recovery Console, with pictures

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Posted Image

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Posted Image

Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

    Posted Image

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

I am so sorry I have not gotten back to you. I did not receive a notification that you responded. I will look at your logs now. Next time, could you just copy and paste the logs here instead of attaching please?

Hey, things are looking ok. How are things working?

Can you tell me, what are you using as a firewall?

Post me a new HJT log also.

Apparently the system's very slow, especially on startup.

Currently using Comodo Firewall Pro, but the system's owner really hates it. Can you recommend an alternative? Money's no object.

Sorry for the delay. Yours happens to be one of those threads that is not notifying me of a response so I did not know you responded. I have to check daily Sorry

This line is why I asked about what firewall was being used. I made the assumption that it was Comodo but wanted to here what you said.

I would like you to run the unintall tool by symantec:

http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgen...005033108162039

I am not sure what Symanted product was installed originally. Maybe you could ask the owner of the computer or maybe it is listed in Add/Remove programs.

Can I ask what your experience is with computers so I know what level I am talking to you at?

Did you do a initial cleanup? (temp files, downloaded programs, ect)

How much RAM is there?
How full is the hard drive?
Did you remove any unused programs yet?
Did you try a defrag yet at all? No need to yet, just answer.

Taz
