I have to admit trying to get a patch for Diner Dash 2 was a dumb idea, so the virus, excuse me malware is understandable, but that does not make it any less annoying. My "protector" AOL Saftey sees nothing wrong with my computer. (which I might add annoys me to no end.) And me being the genius I am, have been probably making things worse deleting random unfamiliar files downloaded at the time I downloaded the patch. Not to mention stopping processes hoping that it is the rat known as CiD.

I've read other posts, and I went to control panel> add remove programs> and deleted not only the ones that began with Bit, but the CiD help desk, which because of my prior DIY adventure were now giving me messages that it was "already uninstalled", and "did I just want to remove it from the list". However even unistalled they keep popping up, and I figure because of how I deleted the files its now deeply embedded in my computer, I can see the files but they're running, and I don't know what's running them. If I did I'd just stop that process and delete it all, but I'm afraid I'll kill my poor computer. To make matters worse its not my computer its my father in laws. To add insult to injury CiD is now popping up ads for spyware protection.

I've seen this hijackthis thing posted everywhere, but I have to admit after getting my first malware I'm plum scared to get another. When I had a mac I never had these problems I've also heard this is a LOP infection or whatever. So basically talk slowly and I promise to stop just deleting stuff and making things worse.

And yes I promise never to do something that dumb again to save me 20 bucks. That 20 bucks would have saved me 3 days of panic.

{Mod Edit; Moved from XP to Am I Infected ~~boopme}

Update: I just ran the Kapersky scan as suggested and this is what was found:

I'm going to continue to follow the online suggestions to post the logs. I haven't deleted anything, though I am very tempted. I ran the critical areas and after that was done Kapersky started acting weird and ended up having an error and I closed it. I also did some computer maintenace and defragged and cleaned up the harddrive. So I'm busy but still waiting for some pointers

***Update***
I just completed the DSS scan and have my logs to post. However I've been doing more thinking: This is a tracker, so is it possible for it to be saving my passwords? I haven't used any of my finacial accounts since it happened and I don't save passwords on here just because of all the friends I have that ended up having their Myspace and email accounts stolen. And they're all different, so I don't have to worry about them getting my Myspace password and getting into my checking account. But could they? Also its finally saying LOP and not just CiD. I'm about 3 minutes from spending 100s of dollars on antivirus and spyware software (which is funny because it all would have never happened if I spent 20) because I have realized that AOL Saftey is not very good. I ran it twice and throughly and it found NO threats and NO infection. I ran Kapersky once and it found 8. And that wasn't even the through version. Okay enough ranting here's my logs:

The OTmoveit2, won't run, it keeps giving me an error that it has encountered a problem and has to close. (asks me to send an error report) I tried downloading it 3 times, and tried running it directly from the internet incase its my computer and no luck. I'll send a second DSS log anyways incase anything has changed, but I haven't done much to it other than check my email and run my AOL saftey, which is no longer finding threats. I also blocked some programs from having access to the internet thru my AOL saftey.

wondering if I blocked its access, I haven't seen any popups in a minute, but I could be wrong.

nevermind they're still popping up  Is there anyway I can move those files and post them so you can read the dates uploaded without the move it program?

Let's do this instead.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Prior to running Combofix.exe you should disable your antivirus program and disconnect from the internet.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

I keep getting this "backdoor" threat called bifrost. i ran a quick scan to see if anything else would pop up, even tho before combofix restarted my comp it just completed a full scan. i'm running another full scan to see. Could it be possible that what combofix is doing is making it easier for my AOL Saftey to find the bad guys? I'm just guessing here I'm not sure what combofix is doing other than scanning moving and deleting files. It is possible its just re-infecting itself but I haven't seen a pop up in awhile. Lord knows I shouldn't speak so soon, the like to trick me into thinking they'r not there and then pop up everywhere 30 minutes later.

You are on the right track. Combofix has quarantined those files and folders, but your scans are now picking them up easier and dealing with them easier. It's all good news.

Please post a new log from DSS.

I'm sooo happy it looks like its stopped! :spacer: I'll know for sure after I try a few more webpages to see if I get any pop ups, but I'm pop up free as of yesterday! :) I'm so happy, now my father in law doesn't have to kill me for messing up his laptop! Yay :thumbup2:

I totally can never thank you for helping me destroy this monster, you;re AWESOME

I'm sure this topic is going to be closed after this so if I notice anything happening again I'll post a new one, and I know to post all of my logs here in this forum now. :spacer:

Looks good to me! :)

Just a few last things and you should be good to go! :thumbup2:

First, your log shows that you don't have the recovery console installed.
Check this link for more info on the recovery console and how to get it installed.

How to install and use the Windows XP Recovery Console

===================

Next, let's remove the tools that we used now that we're done with them.
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

==================

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

That OTMoveIt2 still won't work on my computer, is there another way to clean it? I did update my internet options, and I am in the process of immunizing my computer with spybot. I'm so happy that this computer is going to be healthy and happy. Now I probably should do a scan of my work computer and see if it needs any love :spacer:

The recovery console is going to be the hard part because I'll have to figure out how to get the XP disc without letting on that anything is, or ever was wrong with this laptop. I'm surprised its not done tho, since my father in law deals with computers all day, he's the tech support at his job, lol. :thumbup2: But I'm sure I can get my hands on it to save us from future problems. The loading is taking time, so I'll take the next few days (prob just tonight and tomorrow, to load and install these things so I never have to freak out like this again. :) I'll keep you posted if any other glitches pop up. But so far everythings peachy, except I can't use otmoveit2. thank you so much for you're help, I'll let u know how everything goes.

You can install the recovery console without the disc.
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000635.htm

Try this to clean up instead of using OtMoveit.
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
