Hi I'm new to these forums and using DSS/Hijack this, please don't yell at me for being a n00b  . I've been getting all sorts of strange errors with dll files and startup issues... I think a virus may be to blame. Ran Avast scanner as well as Spybot S&D but came up clean. I have DSS and Hijackthis downloaded and I'm running a Kaspersky online scan now. What are some first steps I can take here?

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

Go ahead and post your DSS log so we can take a look at what's going on.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

I wasn't sure what parts of this to add, so I just added it all...

You are running an older version of Java. This can be a security risk so let's get you the latest version.
Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

=================

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Can you tell more about the errors that you're getting on startup?

Well I had issues with updating Java as you suggested; I kept getting corrupt data errors. Something about cabinet files being corrupt kept popping up. Here's my Kaspersky log:

File name / Threat name / Threats count
C:\Program Files\Incomplete\T-137276-smallville episode red.wm Infected: Trojan-Downloader.WMA.Wimad.m 1
C:\Program Files\Online Services\PeoplePC\ISP5900\Branding\ppal3ppc.exe Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Agent.aeh 1

The selected area was scanned.

By startup errors I mean certain programs have to "close unexpectedly" like DISCover.exe, Windows C++ runtime library components, microsoft error reporting, and media center receiving service. Sometimes windows explorer also shuts down constantly until I restart from task manager.

First I would delete these files that Kaspersky identified for us. They don't indicate an active infection, but they do contain malware and should be removed.

C:\Program Files\Incomplete\T-137276-smallville episode red.wm
C:\Program Files\Online Services\PeoplePC\ISP5900\Branding\ppal3ppc.exe

Next, fix these lines from your Hijackthis log with Hijackthis.

Those two issues aside, I don't think we're dealing with a malware issue here.
Do you have your Windows disc?

Let's see if we can restore any missing or corrupted files that might be causing your issues.

Click Start -> Run -> sfc /scannow

Follow the prompts and insert your disc if asked.

Let me know how it goes.

Since we're sure that it's not a malware issue I recommend that you post into the Windows XP forum to get some troubleshooting help over there. Since you're running Media Center you could have codec issues or even hardware problems depending on your set up. It's far beyond malware removal I'm afraid.

Good luck!
