HI!

This is my first time here, so I hope I don't leave out any information. I have an HP Pavilion Slimline s7600n PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2. For the past year or so, I have been having problems with my PC just shutting off for no reason. It used to only do it while running Java Applets (web and downloaded games). I recently installed Adobe InDesign CS2 & it started shutting off while working in that app (thank GOD for auto recovery) and has shut down a couple times while working in Word. Anyways, just today my Zone Alarm icon in the system tray started showing an x & when I hover over it, it says: True Vector security service is shut down. I tried going into ZA, but there is nothing in there that I can find that will give me an answer. On top of it all, when True Vector shuts off, I can't access the internet. I have to shut down ZA and start it back up, then I get about 5 minutes of internet time before it shuts off again. When I re-start the ZA app, a yellow triangle with an exclamation point pops up in my system tray, but when i try to left or right click on it, it disappears AND there is no information when I hover. I googled this problem, & came across HijackThis. I'm hoping one of the experts can help me!!!!! Thanks in advance!!!! Here is my HJT log:

Hello theface21 :) Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum.. I will be assisting you and will need some time to look over your log.

Please advice me of any programs you have used to try and fix the problems you have encountered. I would also ask that you refrain from running any tools other than those we will ask you to while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

In the meantime please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save to your Desktop.
alternate download site

DSS will do the following:
  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review.
  • Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes.
You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not
    malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad:
    • main.txt <- this one will be maximized
    • extra.txt <- this one will be minimized
  • If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder.
  • Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
-- When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that it is trying to access the Internet especially if your asked to download the most current version of HijackThis. Please ensure that you allow it permission to do so.
-- If you get a warning from your anti-virus while DSS is scanning, please allow DSS to continue as the scan is not harmful.

Since all of our helpers are volunteers and we are really busy I may be a little slow getting back to you, but don't despair as I won't forget.

Thanks,

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly! I haven't used any 3rd party programs to try to fix these problems. The only thing I have done is wipe my hard drive clean to try to fix the PC shut down problem. The ZA issue is brand new to me & so far have only used HJT. Since I posted, I have tried going online about 5 times. ZA will work for about 5 minutes, then True Vector shuts down. I have to completely shut down ZA and restart the app in order for my internet to work. I have even tried getting online with it shut off & that doesn't work either.

I ran DSS & here are the logs from that scan:

Hello again theface21

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

When completed please post a new DSS log along with the one from MBAM. You will only get one part of the DSS log this time around which is normal and nothing to be concerned about.

Thanks,

thewall

Do you wish to get rid of all vestiges of ZoneAlarm? The reason I ask is that you have some parts of it left on your machine and I will include what is necessary to remove it in my next reply. To help you decide you can read this link here. Read the bottom entry and be sure to look at the additional info that is provided.

Let me know as soon as possible and I will get back to you as quickly as I can.
If I have helped you then please consider donating so I can continue the fight against malware Posted Image

Yes, I want to get rid of everything Zone Alarm on my machine. I thought that by un-installing it, I did just that. :-)

Hi theface21, there are some things which need clearing up. Please perform the following:

Go to Start > My Computer
Go to Tools > Folder Options
Click on the View tab
Untick the following:
  • Hide extensions for known file types
  • Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
You will get a message warning you about showing protected operating system files, click Yes
Make sure this option is selected:
  • Show hidden files and folders
Click Apply and then click OK

Run HijackThis.
Click on Do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines (if still present).

We need to backup the registry before we continue.
Registry edits can be potentially dangerous; we can revert to the backup if needed.
Go to Start Run type: regedit OK.
  • On the leftside, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
  • Go up to File Export
    • Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
      Under "Filename" put RegBackup.
  • Choose to save it to C:\
  • Click save and then go to File Exit.
Open Notepad, (Start button, click on Run, type in Notepad, and click OK) copy & pastes the following block of text into Notepad.

REGEDIT4[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{A057A204-BACC-4D26-CEC4-75A487FD6484}][-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{F0D4B231-DA4B-4daf-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA}][HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]"{F0D4B239-DA4B-4DAF-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA}"= -"{A057A204-BACC-4D26-CEC4-75A487FD6484}"=-[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F0D4B239-DA4B-4DAF-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA}][-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A057A204-BACC-4D26-CEC4-75A487FD6484}][-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mypoints.MYPOINTS][HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]"@"=-"PCDrProfiler"=-"KernelFaultCheck"=-

Click on 'File', then 'Save as'
Select 'Save as type:' as All Files,
Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg. Close Notepad.
Doubleclick on fix.reg and answer Yes when prompted to add the contents to the registry.

Since you removed your Zone Alarm firewall, I would like to suppy you with the links to a couple of other free ones. Although Window's firewall works well it only provides one-way protection and it is advisable to have a firewall that works for both incoming and outgoing protection. Remember to disable your current firewall if you do choose to download and install one of the ones I provided so they do not interfere with each other.

Click on this link:Sygate
  • Choose a site to download from where it says Free Downloads From:(I used the first one)
  • A window will open asking if you want to Run or Save. Click Save
  • A window will open, click once on Desktop, then Click Save(if you wish to rename the file do so, but remember what it is for future reference).
  • You will be asked if you wish to run the file.Click Yes.
  • Close all windows which are open. Click Next
  • Check I Accept on the license agreement. Then click Next. Click Next again to complete.
  • Click Finish and click Yes to restart.
When you have time examine the program by alternately left clicking or right clicking the icon in the toolbar. This is a very versatile program. Keep it up to date also.

Here is another free one:(Note. Use only one firewall)

Comodo

Finally, please post a new DSS log, and a description of any remaining problems.

Thanks again for all your help! I did everything above & installed the Sygate FW. It's a pretty cool program! Anyways, my PC is still shutting down for no reason during web-based java applets (pogo.com is the most common one). I don't know if anything can be done about that or not.

I do have a question on one of the alerts I received as soon as Sygate was running. My NDIS User Mode I/O Driver wanted to access the internet. I googled it & found that it doesn't matter if I allow it or not, so I denied it permanantly. However, I keep getting a notification window telling me that it has been blocked from accessing the network. Should I change it to allow access?

Here is my most recent DSS log. This was run as soon as my computer booted up after an unexpected shut-down.

Let's run another tool and see if anything turns up.

Download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
alternate download site 1
alternate download site 2
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.
  • When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Click on "Settings", then check the first five settings:
    *System Protection and Tracing
    *Processes
*Save created processes to the log
    *Drivers
*Save loaded drivers to the log
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so.
Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the
scan.

The GMER log looks OK, but I would still like to try something else to see if we can figure out why your machine is shutting down.

There is still some signs of ZoneAlarm left on your computer. Let's go back and check to see if the following got deleted when we tried to do it the last time.

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete this file if still present. If it is not there please let me know:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\zllictbl.dat

As an example:
To delete C:\WINDOWS\badfile.dll
Double click the My Computer icon on your Desktop. Or click on the Windows KEY + E.
Double click on Local Disc (C:\)
Double click on the Windows folder,
Right click on badfile.dll and then from the menu that appears, click on Delete

Open Notepad, (Start button, click on Run, type in Notepad, and click OK) copy & pastes the following block of text into Notepad.

REGEDIT4[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]"{F0D4B239-DA4B-4DAF-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA}"=-

Click on 'File', then 'Save as'
Select 'Save as type:' as All Files,
Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg. Close Notepad.
Doubleclick on fix.reg and answer Yes when prompted to add the contents to the registry.

Restart your computer

After completion please post another DSS log and let me know if things are any better.
