A couple of days ago the wallpaper changed on my puter to a picture of a building being destroyed by a tornado. I thought my son had put this wallpaper on, turns out he did not, then the next day the wallpaper changed again. this time the wall paper has a blue screen and reads,

Warning: spyware threat has been detected on your pc
Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity.
It is strongly recommended to install an antispyware software to close all security vulnerabilities.
Antispyware software helps protect your pc against spyware and other security threats.
Click here to scan your pc for spyware.

About the same time my anti virus program sounded an alert say a virus has been detected. I tried to have Avast delet the virus however it said that it could not remove the program because that file was in use by another program. The file in question was C:\Documentsand setting\mike\localsettings\TemporaryInternetFiles\content.IE5\3330n134\td(1).exel(upx)"file

I ran noadware program and it picked up a bunch of programs and was able to delet all but the coolwesearch items. I also had Avast scan my computer and it picked up a program and said it was able to delet it however I'm not to sure. The file was, C:\SystemVolumeInformation\_restore(202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9568
I still have the blue screen as my wall paper, however when I shut down the computer my original wallpaper flashes for a second or two during startup and shutdown.
I tried to run the Kapersky scan however my computer just sat there for an hour with no communication betwenn Kapersky and my computer. I did run the Dechard system scan and the results are as follows

Deckard's System Scanner v20071014.68

Hello submike,

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

-- If this error message is displayed when running SDFix: "The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator. Press any key to continue..."
Please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\swreg IMPORT %systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg
Press Ok and then run SDFix again.

-- If the Command Prompt window flashes on then off again on XP or Win 2000, please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\FixPath.exe /Q
Reboot and then run SDFix again.

-- If SDFix still does not run, check the %comspec% variable. Right-click My Computer > click Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables and check that the ComSpec variable points to cmd.exe.
%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe

Thank you for the reply to my request for help. I have done as you instructed me and here are the results. Again thank you for taking your time to help me. The coolwebsearch items that noadaware says is a problem is under my wifes account on the computer. Should I install sdfix on her account and run the same way?

Hi submike,

Looks much better.

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

Beginners Guide to CCleaner

*******************************************

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O18 - Protocol: qbwc - {FC598A64-626C-4447-85B8-53150405FD57} - mscoree.dll (file missing)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix checked"

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Autocomplete Forum History.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all including cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer.

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan

Note that you need to run this scan with Internet Explorer for it to work correctly.

If you have any problem running the scan to completion, disable your Antivirus and/or firewall temporarily, just refrain from surfing around while the scan is running and be sure to re-enable when done.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

1. Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
2. A dialogue box will appear asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat step 1.
3. Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows Kaspersky to run.
4. If running MSAS beta you may receive an alert that an IE ActiveX program requires your approval. Click "Allow"
5. Wait for the scanner to initialize and update its databases. When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
6. Click "Scan Settings" and check the option to use the EXTENDED DATABASE,
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

then click "OK"
7. Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer" and the scan will begin.
8. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save Report As... button:

Posted Image

Under Save as type select Text file write name for the file and save it to your Desktop.
Locate the file at the Desktop, open it, then copy and paste that information in your next post.
9. Post the Kaspersky scan, and a new Hijackthis log.

Seems to be reunning great. How about the one problem that Kapersky scan found in the system volume information, should I worry about that?

Thanks SifuMike.

Hi submike,

Your very welcome.

You can delete SDFix on your desktop, also delete the SDFix folder: C:\SDFix

Kaspersky scanner found a virus that was previously deleted and automaticaly placed in the System Restore folder. It wont do any damage there, but we will get rid of it.

Let's clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regular basis

System Restore will now be active again.

Please read and follow
