My roommate's gonna kill me if I can't fix his computer! (I could say it's his fault for not having anti-virus software, yes? )

I ran the Kaspersky Online Scanner and Deckard's System Scanner and it found bad stuff, but when I start up the computer I still get that blasted "Warning! Spyware detected" etc.etc. junk from Malware Protector 2008. I am also getting a warning from Windows about needing to start in safe mode, which happened after using the DSS program. I have a feeling you're going to tell me this computer is waay messed up already.

Here are the maintxt and extra.txt files:

I may have found the problem. The scans found bad stuff which I quarantined, but I was still getting that stupid message on my desktop. Well! I found that there was a new desktop theme added today, which, guess what, had the "Warning! Spyware detected" message as part of the lovely graphics. I changed my desktop theme to a real one and that message is gone...and I think the software itself was already removed by the scans.

Hello Lisa and welcome to BleepingComputer,

1. * Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Under Browsing History, click Delete.
  • Click Delete Files, Delete cookies and Delete history
  • Click Close below.
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu..
  • Click the Clear now button below.. A new window will popup what to clear.
  • Select all and click the Clear button again.
  • Click OK to close the Options window
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
2. Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first (not for Windows Vista users !).
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode, in case your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. This allows us to help you. (WinXP SP3 users, please download the appropriate SP2 file, Home or Pro, to install the RC)

In the event you already have Combofix, delete your current version and download the latest version as described in the tutorial.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

Note: Make sure not to click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Please post the log from ComboFix (can also be found as C:\ComboFix.txt) in your next reply.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding !!

Greetings,
Thunder

Thunder:

I thought I should tell you about what happened before Combofix ran, in case it matters.

First when I started up the computer Windows told me it had found and removed Spammer:Win32/Cutwail.gen!B. (I downloaded some updates last night before shutting down, and I guess one of those found it.)

On my 1st try to run Combofix, it was just about to start scanning, when I got the Windows "blue screen of death", a stop error. It shut down and restarted the computer, and had to run a disk check. Then Windows told me the system had recovered from a serious error (the stop error, I guess..if you need details of what was in that report sent to Microsoft automatically I can post it).

Then finally I ran Combofix again and it worked. WHEW!

I don't know if any of that is important but I guess it's better to have too much information than not enough.

Here's my Combofix file:

Hello Lisa,

This looks definitely better.

Let's clean up some more :

Open Notepad - don't use any other texteditor than Notepad or the script will fail !
Copy/paste the bold, blue text below into an empty notepad window:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/153194/cant-remove-malware-protector-2008/
Collect::[9]
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kcopt.dll
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"lanmanwrk.exe clean"=-
"KernelDrv.exe clean"=-

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Posted Image

This will start ComboFix again. Upon reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of the Combofix log in your next reply, as well as a fresh HijackThislog.

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box, --do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box. A browser will open.
Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file [9]-Submit_Date_Time.zip.

Are you still having problems ?

Greetings,
Thunder

Thunder:

I sent the .zip file as instructed. I think the new HijackThis log is below...if not let me know.

I did have a new problem today when I started up the computer. It gave a message like "bad check sum" and instructed me to hit F2 to start up with defaults or hit F1 to start up in Recovery Console mode (or similar wording) which I guess is related to that Windows Recovery program..?

Some day I'm going to visit Belgium and do nothing but eat chocolate and drink beer!

Hello Lisa,

I did have a new problem today when I started up the computer. It gave a message like "bad check sum" and instructed me to hit F2 to start up with defaults or hit F1 to start up in Recovery Console mode (or similar wording) which I guess is related to that Windows Recovery program..?

No it's not. That error can occur when you shut down your sytem improperly,
and due to some other reasons.
If you keep getting that message, please check if the CMOS battery isn't out of power.
In any case, it's best to hit the F1 key and have it reset to default values.
Chances are good you'll never see it again. :)

Your JavaVM is also out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u6.
  • Scroll down to where it says The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: Accept License Agreement
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
No more problems ?

Oh, and watch out for our strong beer when you come over, you might get more than you bargained for.

Greetings,
Thunder
