This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding to your posting.
From what you describe, it appears that your boyfriends computer may be infected and the infection may have caused Windows Update to be disabled.
Open Norton 360 and manually run LiveUpdate, so that you have the latest program and definition files applied to Norton 360. After LiveUpdate has completed, please run a "Comprehensive Scan" with Norton 360.
The Windows Firewall should be disabled, as the Norton Personal Firewall is handling this for you. Also make sure that you do not have any other antivirus or internet security applications installed and running, as they can cause conflicts with Norton 360. If you see any listed in Add/Remove programs, remove them from your system.
Please let me know if you are successful at running Windows Update after you complete the process. Also, please let me know which version of Norton 360 you are using.
