well, here goes something! ;)

i found you guys a few weeks back when i was searching for information on a browser hijacker. looked like a real comfy and friendly environment so i thought i'd take a chance. :flowers: i can't recall the hijacker url at the moment, but it was trying to hook me up with a foreign version of internet explorer or something like that? all the text was in french, spanish, something that wasn't english. :trumpet: i'm a new user of firefox cuz i was told it keeps a lot of junk out, but then this. argh!! :inlove: when i was using internet explorer i started getting the hijacker SCROOGLE, i believe the name was? i just want it gone cuz it's driving me up the freakin' wall! i've already downloaded "HijackThis" and am aware of how to make and save a log... agh!!! i was just rudely interrupted by this

Hello go73 and welcome to BleepingComputer.

Almost looks like you have two Antivirus programs installed. I see references to both Avast and McAfee in the registry entries, but only Avast running. Did you replace McAfee with Avast and perhaps not get a complete uninstall of McAfee?

Download the following file and save it to your desktop:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'.

Download Reglook from here, and extract the contents of the zip file to c:\reglook. Open the Reglook folder and then double-click on runme.bat. When the program has completed running it will open a notepad that contains some information. Copy the contents of that notepad and paste it as part of your next reply.

Configure Windows to enable viewing of Hidden and System files.

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ajfripxpud] C:\WINDOWS\System32\cwzvjt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Olympic] C:\Documents and Settings\Greg Oakes\Application Data\sgrunt\IE4321.exe

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

With ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, click on Fix Checked.

Open Windows Explorer (Windows key+e), navigate to and delete the following files and folders if found:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\cwzvjt.exe <--File
C:\Documents and Settings\Greg Oakes\Application Data\sgrunt\ <--Folder

If any of these resist being deleted, boot into Safe Mode and try from there.

Reboot normally and post a new HJT log along with the results from Reglook.

holy bleep that was fast!!! wow, thanks for all that information. it's bed time for me so i'll have to take a fresh look at this thing tomorrow after work. if i even tried to start something now, well, i don't even wanna think about it! i did read it over quick, and i can't believe how these idiots inbed this bleep into our computers just to have this stupid frickin' page pop up. i can't even read it! :flowers: well, ddeerrff thanks a bunch! wish me luck!!

see you soon! :inlove:

go

ps. about that mcafee stuff... yeah, i tried to do the uninstall thing. it came with my dell but all it did was bug me to pay money for an upgrade. money i didn't have. didn't realize it was only a trial version either. they just take your money, especially when you're somewhat naive like myself, though i didn't fall for all these money grabs. it didn't seem to do a damn thing good except annoy the hell outta me! :trumpet: anyhow, i thought i was rid of it. i did see it in the log and it confused me. :bike: oh yeah, i just love these emoticons! :) hahaha!!!... oh wait, i mean... :woot: !!!

goodnite!

ddeerrff i'm back!!! :flowers:

i was using firefox and only thru doing a bit of googling did i find out that you can only download that "DelDomains.inf" thing if you're doing it from within Internet Explorer. i was confused for a bit and then i decided to look into it. i'm so proud of myself. this was a great learning experience over all!! you had to really read and search for stuff. you can't be lazy with these frickin' PCs i tellyah or they'll screw with your sanity!! :trumpet: just gotta face facts... it's not a mac. *sigh*...

so here you go!!!

go :inlove:

i was using firefox and only thru doing a bit of googling did i find out that you can only download that "DelDomains.inf" thing if you're doing it from within Internet Explorer.

Just for future reference..
From within FireFox or Netscape, instead of just clicking on the file you need to RIGHT-CLICK and select "Save Link Target As.."

Other than cleaning out the superfulous McAfee entries, the log look good.

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MCAgentExe] c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MCUpdateExe] C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcupdate.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [McRegWiz] c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcregwiz.exe /autorun

O23 - Service: McAfee.com McShield (McShield) - Unknown owner - c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcshield.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: McAfee SecurityCenter Update Manager (mcupdmgr.exe) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\mcupdmgr.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: McAfee.com VirusScan Online Realtime Engine (MCVSRte) - Unknown owner - c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsrte.exe (file missing)

With ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, click on Fix Checked.

How are things running?

sorry for the delay!!! i did everything you said and it works totally fine know!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! when i can put some money aside, i'll glady consider donating.

the only things i'm left with are "visable" hidden files scattered through out my desktop and various folders? as long as i don't' touch them or delete them, things should be fine? ...or, do i go back through the menus and click on those hidden file radio buttons again??

everything is cool otherwise!! :flowers:

go :trumpet:

You can go back and 'undo' the changes you made to make the files visible. In particular, you will want to put a check mark in the box Hide protected operating system files, and change the radio button selection to Do not show hidden files and folders.

In addition, you can delete 'DelDomains.inf' from your desktop, and the folder reglook from your C:\ drive.

Now that you are clean, please follow these steps in order to keep your computer safe and secure:
