The Mabir.A virus, like its predecessors, targets the version of the Symbian operating system running on Nokia Series 60 handsets. Symbian is the dominant smartphone OS, found on phones made by Motorola, Siemens, Sony Ericsson and Panasonic, as well as Nokia. By Jay Wrolstad CIO Today April 5, 2005 1:53PM Malware practitioners continue to target mobile devices, probing for weaknesses in the software running on next-generation handhelds. The latest attack uses a variant of Cabir, the first virus detected in Symbian OS-based smartphones . In essence, the Mabir.A worm is Cabir with added MMS functionality. Both are written by the same author and have very similar code. Security authorities report that Mabir spreads via Bluetooth using the same routine as early variants of Cabir.
