Hello,

Something awful happened to my computer last night. Trying my best using other people's forum topics, I've run Spybot and Adaware, as well as Stinger, Bitdefender, Panda ActiveScan, CWShredder, and CCleaner (I ran this last). These programs found and erased viruses and a worm I didn't know I had - but my desktop is still quite a mess - many of my icons have disappeared and the nice photo I had displayed is now a giant red screen that says Danger: Spyware... Smartsecurity only $59.95. I've deleted from from Windows and Windows/System all the three-letter, 10kb, .tmp or .html files that were listed as dangerous. However, these little files come back, for after all that work deleting them here they are still listed in my Hijack log after I rebooted. I downloaded AboutBuster but it wouldn't open. I am now downloading Windows updates, and I also have StartDreck. I have a Windows98 OS on a 5-year old Dell, and the slowest internet connection ever (I'm in Nepal doing research). I'm going to post a copy of my HijackThis log, and I'd be most appreciative if you would take a look at it.

Thank you in advance,
Alani

Hi, thanks for helping me out, I really appreciate it.

Right after I posted my first message, I went ahead and pressed fix on those three letter files I had tried to delete previously, and the about:blank lines. This time it seems to have done something, for I no longer have the red advertisement on my screen. Something is still very wrong with it however. For instance, every new icon/file I've put on the desktop after this has happened is now for some reason doubled - I have two of these SPS things, as well as now two SPS logs, and two ZipGenius from earlier.

Anyways, I have followed your instructions, here is the SPS log followed by the new Hijack log.

Yours, Alani

Wow my desktop looks great, back to normal, and I can even right click on it and change the properties again. Thanks very much. How does my HijackThis log look now? I see that another trusted IP range has shown up in place of the one I fixed. Is Kernel32 a problem?:

It's good to hear that your desktop looks great again! Kernel32 is not a problem! And to delete the trusted IP range:

Download: DelDomains.inf
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
Locate DelDomains.inf right-click and select: Install

Reboot your computer and post a new log,

This log is clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts.

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
