Hello.
I came home from work today and noticed that my computer was running much slower than normal. I noticed a new shortcut on the desktop and asked my son what it was.
He had installed a game called Shaiya earlier in the day. A program called GameGuard was also automatically installed with the game. After looking into both of these subjects it seems that the GameGuard program is problematic for many people and I am now assuming that it is what has made the sudden change in my computers speed. It also seems that uninstalling the programs is difficult and involves manually modifying registry items. I am not comfortable doing this and I am posting this topic to get some professional help. The only other info in this forum I could find on this topic mentioned needing to post a HJT log so that is what I am doing here.
Below I have pasted the following txt files per the instructions in the forum intro. I hope I have done this right.
1. Kapersky scan results.
2. DSS results 1
3. DSS results 2.
Thanks in advance for your help and I look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days, please post a new HijackThis log. Thank you for your patience.

If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped.

I do not see any obvious signs of malware.

Let's try this tool first to get rid of GameGuard.
  • Please download nProtectRemover.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Click on the icon (blue with a big red X) to run the program.
  • A DOS window will open, follow the directions.
If this does not work, we will try removing it manually.

I ran the program and got the following messages:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Removing nProtect GameGuard...
Service npptnt2 NOT stopped. (Gameguard not installed)
Service npptnt2 NOT deleted. (Gameguard not installed)
Service npptnt2 registry keys NOT deleted.
nProtect GameGuard drivers NOT removed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
So - not sure if this info is correct or how to confirm if it is actually in my machine or not...

Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

It looks like GameGuard is gone. Are you having any other problems with your computer?

My computer seems to be running OK. Just slower than before the game was installed.
Based on the results shown by the nProtectRemover, it seems that nothing was removed. Was Gameguard even on my machine or is there a chance it is still there?
Thanks.

Click Start > Search. Type in GameGuard and let the computer search for any files with the name GameGuard if you like but I don't think you will find anything since the tool reported no files removed.

I have no way of knowing if GameGuard was ever on your computer since I did not see anything in your HijackThis log regarding GameGuard.

Optional Fixes is the name that we use for fixes for unnecessary programs that load during startup and run in the background. These programs are not required to start automatically as you can start them manually if you need them. You would be removing the program from your startup but you would not be removing the program itself.

Your computer may be sluggish due to the many programs loading during startup and running in the background that are not necessary. Windows has a facility for starting programs at startup time. Some of these programs are required for your computer and the applications installed on it to run correctly. A good example of such a program is a virus-checking application that must always run, constantly checking for and isolating or removing files with viruses. Other such programs are not strictly required, or are optional. In some cases, you can gain significant performance enhancements by disabling the automatic startup of these programs. In many cases, the functionality offered by the programs is still available by starting the programs manually by, for example, starting the program from the Windows Start->Programs menu. Media players and instant messaging programs often fall into this category. In fact, it is common for many modern software applications, when installed, to add programs at startup that add items to the system tray or shortcut (context) menus in Windows Explorer to provide quick access to the features and functions of these applications. While they may be useful, they do increase boot time and consume system resources. It is advised that you disable these programs so that they do not take up necessary resources or slow the boot time.

Other than ScanRegistry, SystemTray, StateMgr, antivirus program entries, and firewall program entries, very few others need to load and run.

I ran the search and it pulled up 3 matches. It looks like all of them live here:

C:\AeriaGames\Shaiya\GameGuard

Within the GameGuard folder are 16 files (3.63 MB).

Can I just delete this folder or will it come back?

When I first researched GameGuard before contacting Bleeping Computer it sounded like this program was "sticky" and changes things in the registry files and to get it back to normal you have to modify the registry. I am not comfortable making changes. That's why I contacted B.C.

Thanks for your help.

Often when you uninstall a program, the folder does not get deleted. Delete the program folder and you should be free of it. It will not come back.

Follow these steps carefully and back up your registry. This is a precaution. If you follow these steps carefully, you should not have any problems.

To get rid of Gameguard manually.

Step 1

Be very careful when editing the registry. Before you do anything, you need to backup your registry.

Making changes to the Windows Registryin Windows XP can be a little intimidating considering how important and sensitive the registry is.

Before you make any change to any registry key, you should export any registry subkeys that contain values that you are planning to make changes to.
Once backed up, you can feel comfortable that just about any minor change you make can be undone quickly.
Follow these easy steps to backup registry subkeys in the Windows XP Registry.
Note: The steps below require working with the Windows Registry. Making changes other than the ones described below could cause system problems.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Backing up Windows Registry keys usually takes less than 5 minutes
Here is How:
  • Click on Start and then Run.
  • In the text box in the Run window, type regedit and click OK. This will open the Registry Editor program.
  • Using the [+] icon, navigate down through the branches until you reach the subkey (the folder on the left) that contains the value(s) you are going to change in the window on the right.
  • Make sure the subkey you navigated to in the previous step is selected on the left.
  • From the Registry Editor menu, choose File and then Export.
  • In the Export Registry File window that appears, choose a location to save the file in.
Note: I recommend choosing your desktop or the C:\ drive. Both are easy to access in case you run into problems later and need to use the file.
  • Locate the File name: text field and enter a name for the backup file.
Note: This name is for you to remember what the exported registry file is for. This name has no effect on anything and doesn't have to be named something technical. If you are backing up a registry subkey named {EFA24E64-B078-11D0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}, feel free to call it My Reg Backup or whatever makes sense to you.
  • Click the Save button.
  • A Registration File with an REG file extension will be created in the location you chose in Step 6 and with the file name you chose in Step 7. Continuing the example from the last step, the file would be named My Reg Backup.reg.
  • You can now make changes to the registry keys inside the subkey that you just exported.
  • If at any point in the future you would like to undo any changes you've made to these registry keys, simply restore the registry keys back into the Windows XP Registry.
  • For more information, see How To Backup Registry Keys in Windows XP.
Step 2

RegSeeker is a FREEWARE utility designed to manage your Windows Registry. You can search for items, uninstall applications, clear histories, clean your registry (wrong entries) and more!
  • Please download RegSeeker,
  • Extract it to its own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program.
  • Maximize the window and click Clean registry.
  • Check all sections and click OK.
  • When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the Select all button, then Select all again.
  • Then right click within the search results and select Delete.
  • Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing.
  • Reboot and make sure your Control Panel and Add or Remove Programs programs are working properly. Basically, just do a quick check of everything.
  • In the event anything was broken, you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen.
  • Reboot when done.
  • NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
  • Some items may come back because of the programs you have running.
Step 3
  • Open RegSeeker, click Find In Registry.
  • Type in nnptn2.sys.
  • If RegSeeker finds the file on your computer, it will tell you where it is and you can delete it.
  • Do the same thing for nppt9x.vxd.
OR

Step 4

Please download Registrar Lite.
  • Install the program and run it
  • In the Address box, copy and paste the following:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_NPPTNT2

  • Right‑click on NPPTNT2 and choose Delete
. Please let me know how your computer is running.

OK I finished.

Step 1: Seemed to go OK.
Step 2: Went OK but in the end, 10 items come back (which I assume is normal from the instructions).
Step 3: At first RegSeeker found both nnptn.sys and nppt9x.vxd. However when I went to the location it gave me, neither file showed up.
I exited the program and tried a few more times and during my last try the files stopped showing up. Weird.

Let me know what you think.

I will use my computer for a couple of days and let you know if it seems to run faster than before or if anything seems off.

Thanks for hanging in there with me.
